    David's son used to keep

a dove close at his gatherings.

She served him for a lifetime, just as

he had wished, with honesty and integrity.

Then she went to his officials,

one day, to convey his greeting to them.

And beneath her wing were the letters,

in which honor had been decreed for her.

Then the foolish dove wished to learn

    his purpose from his letters.

She turned to the first, which was

addressed to his deputy at Ramah.

She saw that in it he ordered

his official to give the dove a crown,

and said, 'Give her full care

on her travels and during her stay.'

And in the second he directs that

she be given gardens in Tihamah.

And she turned to the third and did not

feel ashamed to break its seal.

Then she saw him command that

she should have leadership over the birds.

So she wept at that in remorse.

Alas, remorse is of no avail.

And she came to God's prophet,

saying, 'O Lord, keep me safe!'

She said, 'I lost the letters, O

my master, in the land of al-Yamamah,

    because of my haste when

the hawk came at me, driving me before it.'

So he replied, 'No! You have done what

    nearly brought on Judgment Day.

But this is punishment enough for you:

Whoever betrays is betrayed by honor.'
