Someone had a donkey and a camel.

One day they both grew weary of bondage.

So they awaited the first signs of darkness,

And set off together into the desert,

    Beholding the face of freedom

And breathing in its sweet scent.

So they agreed to spend their lives there,

And were content with its water and grass.

And after a night of travel,

The donkey turned to the camel

    فَقِف فَمشي كُلُّهُ عَقيمُ

    And said, “My brother, I am in great distress;

So stop, for all this walking is in vain.”

So he said, “Ask—may my mother and father be your ransom!

Perhaps through me you may attain a lofty goal.”

He said, “Come with me to make wishes come true,

Or wait here for your free companion.

    I must return to town,

Because I left my lead rope there.”

So he said, “Go, and stay with your brother, the stake,

For you were created only to be tethered.”
