    وَالحُبُّ يَصلُحُ بِالعِتابِ وَيَصدُقُ

    As for reproach, it best befits those we love;

    And love is mended by reproach and grows true.

    O you whom I love and revere—it is honor enough for you

    Among the slender beauties to be revered and adored.

    Distance has drawn me nearer to you; will you, I wonder,

    Be harsh and turn away, or soften and be gentle?

    فَاِعطِف فَذاكَ بِجاهِ حُسنِكَ أَليَقُ

    My humility and pleading rest in your beauty's protection;

    So show compassion: that better befits your beauty's dignity.

    وَأَنا الوَفِيُّ مَوَدَّتي لا تَخلُقُ

    Youth has grown threadbare, yet I still preserve it;

    And I am faithful: my affection never wears out.

    I kept it company for twenty blameless years,

    My lot with it was sweet, and my life delightful.

    My heart, unfortunate today, you remembered

    The days when you were fortunate in youth's company.

    لَهفي عَلَيكَ لِكُلِّ ذِكرى تَخفُقُ

    So you fluttered at the memory of youth and its days;

    How I grieve for you—you flutter at every memory!

    How often you melted in passion's fires—and today, from

    Sorrow for it and regret, you burn.

    You were the nets, and in youth your quarry was

    The gazelles you would enslave and set free.

    وَاليَومَ كُلُّ حِبالَةٍ لا تَعلَقُ

    Your snares beguiled the beauties for a little while;

    And today not a single snare catches anything.

    Is there for a man, beyond the days of youth,

    Serenity to surround him and companionship to enfold him?
