Do good with whatever power you have been given,
And intercede for the offender before the assembly.
إِذfor كَيفَhow تَسموyou rise لِلعُلاto the heights ياO فَتىyoung man
إِنif أَنتَyou لَمnot تَنفَعyou benefit others وَلَمand not تَشفَعِyou intercede
For how can you rise to the heights, young man,
If you neither do good nor intercede?

يُعجِبُit delights أَهلَpeople of الفَضلِvirtue فَاِسمَعso listen وَعِand take heed
I have a true account concerning this,
That delights the virtuous—so listen and take heed.
قالواthey said اِستَوىhe took his seat اللَيثُthe lion عَلىupon عَرشِهِhis throne
فَجيءَthen was brought فيin المَجلِسِthe assembly بِالضِفدَعِwith the frog
They said the lion sat upon his throne,
Then the frog was brought into the assembly.
وَقيلَand it was said لِلسُلطانِto the sovereign هَذيthis one الَّتيwho
بِالأَمسِyesterday آذَتshe offended عالِيَexalted المسمَعِhearing
And the sovereign was told: This is the one who
Yesterday offended your exalted ears.
تُنَقنِقُshe croaks الدَهرَall the time بِلاwithout عِلَّةٍa cause
وَتَدَّعيand she claims فيin الماءِthe water ماwhat تَدَّعيshe claims
She croaks endlessly, without cause,
And in the water makes the claims she makes.
فَانظُرso consider إِلَيكَto you الأَمرُthe matter فيconcerning ذَنبِهاher offense
وَمُرand command نُعَلِّقُهاwe shall hang her مِنَby الأَربَعِthe four limbs
So consider her offense—the decision rests with you—
And give the order: we shall hang her by all four limbs.
فَنَهَضَthen rose الفيلُthe elephant وَزيرُvizier of العُلاeminence
وَقالَand he said ياO ذاpossessor of الشَرَفِhonor الأَرفَعِthe loftiest
Then the elephant, the exalted vizier, rose
And said: O you of the loftiest honor,
لاno خَيرَgood فيin المُلكِkingship وَفيand in عِزِّهِits glory
إِنif ضاقَwas too narrow جاهُthe high standing of اللَيثِthe lion بِالضِفدَعِfor the frog
There is no good in kingship or its glory
If the lion's grandeur has no room for the frog.
فَكَتَبَso he wrote اللَيثُthe lion أَماناًa pledge of safety لَهاfor her
وَزادَand he added أَنthat جادَhe was generous بِمُستَنقَعِwith a marsh
So the lion wrote her a pledge of safety,
And went further, generously granting her a marsh.
