Great among men is he who weeps for the great,

And laments them, even when they are bones.

And more generous than a raincloud during drought

Is a young man who revives the noble with his praise.

And what excuse has one who falls short in recompense,

When he repays them with words alone?

Will anyone, then, convey to Guillaume from me

    A message befitting that station?

May God guard you, valiant king,

Who tended a valiant king beneath the earth.

I see that oblivion had left him thirsty; so when

You stood at his grave, you were the raincloud.

You bring his era so near to people that

You left the great man only a year back in history.

Do you know which sovereign you salute,

And to which crowned king you offer greetings?

You hailed the greatest of earth's people in war,

And their noblest when they dwell in peace.

You stood beside him, reminding him of kings

Who were wont to meet him standing.

And many a war brought them together: they were

Its iron weapons, while he was the keen-edged sword.

    Humanity had bleeding wounds,

And today you are the one who dressed those wounds.

And when you said what you had said about him,

And made the kingdoms and humankind hear,

Humanity wondered, wounded as it was:

    Was that love, or revenge?

Yet you are too noble to cast scorn on a dead man,

And you are too kind to harm bones.

For had immortality been the lot of any king,

He would surely have won immortality by his keen sword's edge.
