and noted the plump ones, male and female.
He knew the fat and the fatness

وَإِنَّand that ماwhat كانَwas قَديماًformerly زالاhas passed away
He says that his ways have changed,
He says that his state has changed
and that what once was has passed away,
And what was old has passed
لِكَونِbecause ماwhat حَلَّbefell مِنَof المَصائِبِthe calamities
مِنfrom غَضَبِwrath اللَهِGod عَلىagainst الثَعالِبِthe foxes
because the calamities that had struck
Because of the calamities that have befallen
came from God's wrath against the foxes.
From the wrath of God upon the foxes
وَيُغلِظُand he makes solemn الأَيمانَthe oaths لِلدُيوكِto the roosters
لِماfor whatever عَسىmight يَبقىremain مِنَof الشُكوكِthe doubts
And he swears solemn oaths to the roosters,
And he swears strong oaths to the roosters
to dispel whatever doubts may remain,
For what may remain of doubts
بِأَنَّهُمthat they إِنif نَزَلواthey disembark فيon الأَرضِthe land

that if they come ashore,
That if they descended on earth
they will see from him only what pleases.
They would see everything that pleases

It is said: then, when they left the ship,
It was said that when they left the ship
he walked with the plump ones, male and female,
He walked with the fat and the fatness
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماfor emphasis نَصَفواthey reached halfway الطَريقاthe road
لَمdid not يُبقِleave remaining مِنهُمof them حَولَهُaround him رَفيقاa companion
until, when they had gone halfway along the road,
Until when they were halfway
he left not one of them beside him as a companion.
None of his companions remained around him
وَقالَand he said إِذwhen قالواthey said عَديمُdevoid of الدينِfaith
لاno عَجَبٌwonder إِنif حَنَثَتproved false يَمينيmy oath
And he said, when they called him faithless:
And he said, while the bankrupt of religion said
No wonder if my oath proved false!
No wonder I broke my oath
فَإِنَّماfor only نَحنُwe بَنيsons of الدَهاءِcunning
نَعمَلُwe work فيin الشِدَّةِhardship لِلرَخاءِfor ease
For we, the sons of cunning,
For we are the sons of foolishness
work in hardship only to secure ease.
We work in hardship for prosperity
وَمَنand whoever تَخافُyou fear أَنthat يَبيعَhe might sell دينَهhis faith
تَكفيكَis enough for you مِنهُfrom him صُحبَةُcompanionship السَفينَهthe ship
And anyone you fear might sell his faith—
And whoever you fear will sell his religion
his company aboard the ship is enough for you.
Your company on the ship suffices you
