مَتىwhen كانَتِwas الأَرضُthe earth مَثوىthe resting place of القَمَرthe moon
Stand by the graves; let us question Umar:
When did the earth become the moon's resting place?
سَلواask الأَرضَthe earth هَلwhether زُيِّنَتit was adorned لِلعَليمِfor the learned one
وَهَلand whether أُرِّجَتwere perfumed كَالجِنانِlike gardens الحُفَرthe grave-pits
Ask the earth: was it adorned for the learned one,
and were the grave-pits perfumed like gardens,
وَهَلand whether قامَrose رُضوانُRidwan مِنfrom خَلفِهاbehind them
يُلاقيto greet الرَضِيَّthe well-pleasing one النَقِيَّthe pure one الأَبَرّthe most righteous
and did Ridwan rise from beyond them
to greet the worthy, the pure, the most righteous?
فَلَوfor if عَلِمَknew الجَمعُthe throng مِمَّنamong those who مَضىpassed on

For had the throng of those gone before known,
the throng would have stood aside for him until he passed

Strange is your death; stranger still
is your life, in its length and brevity.

For before it, the world had never heard,
or known, of a Qur'an abridged.

And life's cares may kill a man,
and the heart's preoccupation and the strain of thought.
دَفَنّاwe buried التَجارِبَexperiences فيin حُفرَةٍa grave-pit

How many journeys you made, like a star,
whose traces nomads and townsfolk saw!

And a group you handpicked weeps,
noble in aim, noble in purpose.

Your life held lessons for them;
and your death yesterday was one more lesson.

وَمادارَand never arose ذِكرُmention of الرَدىdeath فيin السَمَرthe evening conversation
We stayed up one night, shortly before death,
and death was not mentioned in our evening talk.
فَقُمتَthen you rose إِلىtoward حُفرَةٍa grave هُيِّئَتwas made ready
وَقُمتُand I rose إِلىtoward مِثلِهاone like it تُحتَفَرis being dug
Then you set out for a grave made ready,
and I for one like it, still being dug.
مَدَدتُI stretched out إِلَيكَtoward you يَداًa hand لِلوَداعِfor farewell

I stretched out a hand to you in farewell,
and Fate stretched out a hand to meet you.

I would have hidden you فيin مُقلَتيmy eye مِنout of حَذَرfear
And had I known what tomorrow held,
I would have hidden you in my eye, out of fear.

And they said you were ailing, but it did not alarm me—
yet fire begins with nothing but sparks.

مِنَbecause of الحُزنِgrief إِلّاexcept يَسيراًa little خَطَرcame to mind
I elegized you, unable to command my thoughts
for grief, save the few that came to mind.
فَفيكَso through you عَرَفتُI came to know اِرتِجالَthe spontaneous outpouring of الدُموعِtears
وَمِنكَand from you عَلِمتُI learned اِرتِجالَthe spontaneous outpouring of الدُرَرpearls
So through you I learned how tears come unbidden,
and from you I learned how pearls come unbidden.

And one like you is mourned with verses of the Book,
and one like you is ransomed with half of humankind.

So, O grave, be a garden of divine favor
over him, and be a bouquet of flowers.

May tears water you; and if they do not last,
as is their habit, may rain water you.
