Do the heavenly lights sometimes descend to earth?

And do they take form as individuals and dignitaries?

They descended upon the first abode on earth that raised

A kingdom for the sun and dominion for the moons.

It mastered the arts before art was created, and burst forth

With learning and knowledge upon the bygone age.

An ancestral heritage: if we kept silent about their glories,

Out of modesty, it would speak through rock and flint.

They turned the world's globe; it found no

Stronger right hands for the king's scepter.

And made Time a laughingstock, mocking it,

Until, through destruction, it achieved construction for them.

No people before them traversed the earth's paths,

Nor the surging seas, their open waters and shores.

Benefactors among them led mankind, and went

Bravely to death beneath the banner of knowledge.

They crossed the billowing sea aboard a timber and a mast,

And ventured deep into the wilderness, like lions, alone.

In times when land was not plundered by the steam train,

Nor steam the captain of the water's daughter.

Did the rising generation escort knowledge's caravan and gather round

    Genius's loads and traveling litters?

And accompany the esteemed procession, clad in

Civilization's glory, in banners and riders alike?

The flag advances in harmony beneath its banner,

And you will never see brothers like knowledge's soldiers.

Knowledge unites in one race and one homeland

Tribes of differing races and homelands.

And nothing has increased your knowledge like the mapping of the earth,

Of earth as a home and living beings as neighbors.

A luminary disclosed the dusty earth, and it lay bare:

Crops and udders, territory and inhabitants.

And divided the earth into hills and valleys,

And detailed the sea in shells and coral.

And described people's customs and temperaments,

And distinguished people by races and religions.

O delegation of the kingdoms, the Nile shook its shoulder

When you alighted in its valley as guests.

At dawn, a traveler from your processions came to the port,

So it was smiling in every quarter, full of joy.

Your ship sailed upon it, so it turned her about

In honor, from prow to rudder.

In meeting you beneath the sea's sunlit sky,

And at times, adorned, in the open expanse of land.

And had you alighted there while Time was fair,

You would have alighted in the realm's bride, splendidly built.

When the lighthouse beyond the sea was radiant,

As though it were daybreak emerging from its curtained chamber.

It towered behind the night sky, ablaze,

Seeming like Saturn upon the balconies of the heavens.

The sailing ships fold the sea as they approach it,

Sailing as warships, or gliding through channels.

For civilization's light, travelers seek no

Proof, neither by day nor by night.

O procession of knowledge, halt with it in the land of Memphis,

Let it commune with a cradle and remember youth as a young man.

It wept for its childhood amulets there, and wept for

Playgrounds among the valley's hills, and embracing arms.

A land where it grew, with no companions in its precincts

Except prophets who were pure, and priests.

Jesus, son of Mary, trailed his mantle there,

And Moses, son of Imran, trailed his staff there.

But for modesty, she would confide her need to you,

Hoping for helpers among you against the passing days.

When you disperse through the West as tongues,

You will soften every heart that has not grown soft.
