    How wondrous is Sadiq's pen—what a pen!

Its charm puts every new thing to shame.

It clothed writing throughout all the lands of the East

In beauty, and freed it from constraint.

It guides every faltering writer toward beautiful handwriting,

And helps every accomplished writer excel.

More precious to writers, should they obtain it,

Than a diamond plume is to graceful women.

And sweeter upon the parchment, when it glides over it,

Than al-Laythi's plectrum upon the oud.

And almost revives Mu'nis with its scratching sound,

And says, "Days of Ibn Muqla, return!"

Were there nothing more to it than that it is

Egyptian, it would deserve my praise.
