And judge with Your justice; indeed, Your justice has never been
disputed or doubted.

Was it for appointed deaths that drew near and stood ready
that You ordained the bombardment of the forsaken shore?

It was not defended, nor could it be protected, by
two ships more delicate than Cook's steamships.

This one, with her broken side, is sinking,
plunging down—and that one too, with her shattered flank.

Beirut, the lions died without a fight;
they unsheathed no sword, nor did they defend you.

Anyone can hunt the lion while it is shackled;
but hunting the unbound lion is hard.

even if they were made of cast gold.

One day, in your shade, I drank with young men,
and they surpassed the angels in the majesty of kings.

until he would almost ransom you with Jillaq.

not to mention noble virtues and generosity, are your kin.

You have neighbors on the hills of the blessed Nile;
if they could, they would wash you with their tears.
