And how majestic in the heights is the full moon of your sky!
It shone brightly in the heights like a full moon.

the builder of its pillar has been restored to rebuild it.

Who deserves to be counted as prince other than you?

A lineage—were the stars to join its necklace,
A lineage - if the stars were strung to form its line
they would disdain to dwell in the celestial spheres.
they would be too proud to inhabit the celestial spheres.

You established an order, O Abu Al-‘Abbas, defense
secure in its course, founded on your rightly guided reason.
against prodigality upon mature, guided principles.

All your radiant, happy days
Your noble white days are all

عَذراءَ هامَت في صِفاتِ عُلاكا
O discerning king, here she is for you:
O exotic king - the maiden
a virgin enamored of the qualities of your greatness.
soared in qualities of your summit towards you.
فَطَوَتso she traversed إِلَيكَto you البَحرَthe sea أَبيَضَwhite نِسبَةًby comparison

لِنَظيرِهِ المَورودِ مِن يُمناكا
So she crossed to you the sea, white by comparison
She crossed the sea, white in lineage,
with its counterpart, whose waters are drawn from your right hand.
to its counterpart coming from your Yemen.

قَدِمَت عَلَيَّ جَديدَةً نُعماكا
She came to your gate on a feast day, after
She arrived at your doorstep for a feast after
your bounty had come anew to me.
arriving to me newly blessed.
أَوَand is it that كُلَّماwhenever جادَتpoured forth نَداكَyour bounty رَوِيَّتيmy considered verse

سَبَقَت ثَنايَ بِالارتِجالِ يَداكا
Is it that whenever my considered verse pours forth praise of your bounty,
Or does your munificence, whenever it runs freely,
your hands forestall my praise with spontaneous giving?
precede my odes in improvisation with your hand?
أَنتَyou الغَنِيُّfree of need عَنِfor الثَناءِpraise فَإِنso if تُرِدyou desire

You have no need of praise; but if you desire
You are needless of praise - so if you wish for what entertains
what delights the cultured king, then take it.
the scholarly king, well here it is!
