How long will discord divide you—how long?

And this great uproar—what is it for?

And why do some of you scheme against others,

    And display hostility and strife?

And where is victory? Neither has Egypt settled

In any state, nor has Sudan endured.

And where did you take truth, when

You rode the darkness in its cause?

It has become rule and spoils for you,

Though its watchword was swift, crushing death.

You trusted and accused throughout the nights,

Yet they sustained neither trust nor accusation.

You kindled a fire among yourselves in the country

That was peace for its occupier.

When some people tame it with reason,

    Others' passions renew its blaze.

You shot at one another, and people said: “A people

Whose affairs have ended in failure.”

And Egypt was the first whom you struck,

So she could not count her wounds and gashes.

    When archers are bad archers,

They lodge their arrows away from their mark.

After the firmest bond and a rank

    Like a lion's fangs, unassailable,

Have you wronged one another, as though you were cells

Of cancer, finding no bond to unite them?

I see their airman looming over us,

Soaring above our heads and circling.

And I behold their army, which for half a century

Has pitched its tents before our eyes.

So our trusted men have not diminished it by a spear,

Nor have our traitors increased it by a sword.

And we find the sky all lightning and thunder

Whenever Qasr al-Dubara clouds over within it.

When horses burst upon us from it,

We ride silence or lead speech onward.

So we return with mutual desertion and wrangling,

While he comes away with what he sought and desired of us.

We held the world by its pliant nose for a time,

But did not govern the world well.

We came forth as lions while it came toward us,

And went away as ostriches when it turned its back.

We took charge, party after party,

Yet were neither reformers nor noble men.

We made government appointments and dismissals,

And went no further than reward and revenge.

And we governed affairs, once they were left to us,

By the whims of souls, so they did not run straight.

If the declaration was outright unbelief,

Then why did men go mad with love for it?

And how can it be lawful in some hands,

    Yet unlawful in other hands?

And I do not know, when you were given it to drink that morning,

Whether you were given an antidote or deadly poison.

Martyr of truth, rise and see it orphaned

In a land where orphans have been forsaken.

There it dwelt upon lips as a stranger,

And passed over hearts, but did not stay.

You fell ill, and no soul spent the night well,

As though illness lay in the homeland's lifeblood.

And I have never seen the like of your bier as it glided along,

Covering the earth and gathering all humankind.

It bore resolve and carried faith,

Embraced nobility and held the reins.

And I cannot forget you at twenty, when

You rose before it as a full moon.

You are pointed out in the gathering, and targeted

By the eyes of those who love and those who feign blindness.

When you came to the pulpits, you were Quss,

When he mounted the camel's hump at Ukaz.

And your ardor for truth is more delightful,

And your smile gentler when you utter it.

And in the skin of truth you bear a face

Frank and open, never wearing a veil.

Do you remember a generation before this one,

Whose teacher slept while we kept watch in his stead?

Colts of truth—we made them hate

The bit and bridle of imperial rule.

Your Liwa gave them drink from a goblet,

And poetry was a goblet in my hands.

Of patriotism they preserved a pure wine,

We broke the seal on its aged wine.

We planted its vines, and their roots flourished

In every hollow, and their wine grew pure.

You gathered them to the tones of a voice

That, like the Trumpet's blast, set the stones in motion.

Yours were the speeches that made enemies choke

On their vehemence, yet went down smoothly for drinking companions.

So in their bitterness they were a roar,

And in their sweetness, a gazelle's gentle call.

Through you patriotism stood upright, though it had been

A fanciful tale or a dream.

From it you built the cause of homelands,

And made withdrawal its supporting pillar.

As a child, you stirred the sons of the age with it,

And as a youth, you awed the sons of the world with it.
