At the festival of justice, or the day of blood,

Are souls of martyrs who have not spoken.

The light of their blood shines upon Hathor,

Like Husayn's blood upon the crescent of Muharram.

The day of struggle, like the opening of its daylight,

Sways its flanks, its mouth smiling.

They rose to make pilgrimage to the house that day, as though they were

Radiant angels in the sky of the pilgrimage season.

Why should they not look down from heaven, when indeed

Their graves lie between the clouds and stars?

The absent ones grieved them, and they were dismayed

By what befell the radiant yet darkened house.

And if you look at life, you will find it

A wedding held on the fringes of a mourning gathering.

    Blood-red freedom must have

Solace that lulls her wound like balm,

And a smile rising over her features, just as one

Rises on a bereaved mother's mouth and a widow's lips.

Had I witnessed the daylight of the day of heroism,

I would have composed for generations what had never been composed.

Its reality sang, and its beauty outstripped

The reach of inspired, ingenious imagination.

Were it not for exile's afflictions or its obstacles—

And exile is a state of Hell's torment—

I would have gathered the colors of events into a picture,

Portraying in it the figure of one who submits.

And depicted the Nile in it, restraining its anger,

And depicted it enraged, not restraining its anger.

It called the country into the fray, then ventured forth—

Patriotism, with an intellectual and a teacher.

It rose against the protector standing ready, and swore

To seek protection from none but Him—exalted be His majesty.

Its Lord emptied the quiver, and

His hand chose three arrows to bring it victory.

Each an unarmed man, his right held in his right hand,

Like a sword in the right hand of a distinguished armored warrior.

They did not draw back in an hour that had granted

The king of the seas victory over every Caesar who drew back.

They halted their mounts at his palace steps,

With might and authority barring the steps.

And they advanced until, when they had conveyed their message,

    They inspired young Egypt: 'Advance!'

The lion cubs streamed from the forest; within them seethed

The lioness's milk, and the lion's vein stirred.

O day of struggle, you were clothed in the hue of her beauty

By freedom, who dyed your skin with blood.

You became one of time's brightest days, and now

The lines of your scowling face have smiled.

    يا لَيتَ مِن سَعدِ الحِمى لَم تَيتَمِ

    And indeed, you were orphaned, and so became more magnificent;

Oh, would that losing the homeland's Sa'd had not orphaned you!

    لَيسَ الشُبولُ عَنِ العَرينِ بِنُوَّمِ

    Let the cubs' father sleep, his eyelids filled with rest;

The cubs do not sleep heedless of the lair.
