عَلِيُّ لَوِ اِستَشَرتَ أَباكَ قَبلاً

عَلِيُّ لَوِ اِستَشَرتَ أَباكَ قَبلاً

فَإِنَّ الخَيرَ حَظُّ المُستَشيرِ

فَإِنَّ الخَيرَ حَظُّ المُستَشيرِ

Ali, had you consulted your father beforehand—

Ali, if only you had consulted your father beforehand

for good fortune is the lot of one who seeks counsel—

For good fortune is the share of one who seeks counsel

إِذاً لَعَلِمتَ أَنّا في غِناءٍ

إِذاً لَعَلِمتَ أَنّا في غِناءٍ

وَإِن نَكُ مِن لِقائِكَ في سُرورِ

وَإِن نَكُ مِن لِقائِكَ في سُرورِ

you would have known that we already have enough,

Then you would have known that we live in prosperity

though we rejoice in meeting you.

And though we delight in your arrival

وَما ضِقنا بِمَقدَمِكَ المُفَدّى

وَما ضِقنا بِمَقدَمِكَ المُفَدّى

وَلَكِن جِئتَ في الزَمَنِ الأَخيرِ

وَلَكِن جِئتَ في الزَمَنِ الأَخيرِ

We were not troubled by your cherished arrival,

We were not troubled by your blessed coming

but you came in the latter years.

But you came in grievous times
