Clouds passed over the land of Giza,

And the moon in its fullness alighted in its sky.

    And rain visited Ismail's gardens,

Like his father, his benefactions are mighty.

The two pyramids bent their flanks in pride,

And the third, the lower one, said, "Peace!"

Come forth, Memphis: this is Khufu's crown,

Like the sun's disk, known to all mankind.

Heads among Pharaoh's sons raised it,

    And heads among Ismail's successors.

It shone in your sky, peerlessly splendid,

Majesty rests upon it, and it bears a badge of honor.

    Civilization grew within its adornments,

And order came of age upon its jewels.

And art attained, in the earliest nights

And the last of them, a glory beyond reach.

A shade walked through the Giza of Fustat,

Like the Nile's shade, by which thirst was quenched.

Whenever it touched soil, that soil became musk,

And beneath it dust rivaled gold.

And if it settled in a land, there rose within it

A wall for civilization, or a pillar.

So a school is built to wage war on ignorance,

And a hospital through which sickness is driven away,

And a house where help is sought, from which go forth

To the rescue, valiant and noble men:

Healers of wounds at times, and at times

Water spouts when the blaze erupts.

And basins where the Nile is tamed,

And every thoroughbred has its bridle.

O father of Farouk, we have come in ranks,

And you are the imam among the ranks.

Through you we turned toward the Sacred House,

And Egypt, in her own right, is the Sacred House.

You rose over Upper Egypt, and it rejoiced until

A smile rose upon the Sphinx's lips.

A cavalcade in which hopes journeyed,

And turning heads and pressing crowds surrounded it.

How many villages lie along your path,

Where the grave-stones are grander than the houses!

As though the sleepers in every hollow

Were awake, and the waking were asleep.

Indeed, time has afflicted the people; look,

For at your hands the great hardships are eased.

And the day after tomorrow, a year of misery will depart,

And a year of blessings will succeed it.

Over Egypt rolls, from state to state,

A time whose two states have no permanence.

    أَلَيسَ عَلى يَدَيكَ لَهُ تَمامُ

    And Egypt is your grandfather's building, still unfinished;

Is it not to be completed at your hands?

For we are not a nation sitting idle in the sun,

Nor a country whose stock-in-trade is talk.

But a resolve, at every moment,

Whose edifice the valiant king strengthens.

We seek the furthest goal and press onward,

And you are the guiding rein along the road.

And we shorten one step and lengthen another,

And the distance and the goal compel us.

And in one situation we endure hardships,

While another situation overwhelms our patience.

So strengthen the civilization of the past with another,

Proud of your age and marked by it.

    Papyrus pages flutter within it,

And marble speaks within its temples.

May you and the valley you guard for us be protected

By an eye from the All-Merciful that never sleeps.

For if Egypt's crown is her support,

Then Egypt is the support of her lofty crown.

May Egypt rejoice, and may her sons rejoice,

For the head and body are united.
