لله أنت مؤلفا ومدوِّنا

And noble is your volume, in its composition and title.

فيه الجواهر قد عُرفن وإنما

Within it the jewels have been recognized; yet

Before the jewels, we already knew the mine.

زينت معناه بلفظك شائقا

زينت معناه بلفظك شائقا

وأتيت بالمعنى للفظك أزينا

وأتيت بالمعنى للفظك أزينا

You adorned its meaning with your wording, making it captivating,

And brought meaning to make your wording lovelier.

وملأته من حكمة وفكاهة

وملأته من حكمة وفكاهة

وجلوته مثل الرياض وأحسنا

وجلوته مثل الرياض وأحسنا

And filled it with wisdom and humor,

And made it shine like gardens, lovelier still.

وهو كالندىِّ وأنت بين سطوره

وهو كالندىِّ وأنت بين سطوره

ملك الحديث تنقلا وتفننا

ملك الحديث تنقلا وتفننا

And it is like an assembly, and you, among its lines,

Are king of conversation, ranging widely and displaying artistry.

أو تلك جنات البيان تفجرت

أو تلك جنات البيان تفجرت

فيها المعارف للبصائر أعينا

فيها المعارف للبصائر أعينا

Or those are gardens of eloquence; there have burst forth

Within them springs of knowledge for discerning minds.

والعلم ليس بكامل في حسنه

والعلم ليس بكامل في حسنه

حتى يصيب من البيان محسِّنا

حتى يصيب من البيان محسِّنا

And knowledge is not complete in its beauty

Until it gains an embellishment from eloquence.

ويكاد قارئه لكل عبارة

ويكاد قارئه لكل عبارة

يزداد إِنسانية وتمدنا

يزداد إِنسانية وتمدنا

And with each phrase, its reader almost

Grows more humane and more civilized.
