مَنwho صَوَّرَfashioned السِحرَthe magic المُبينَmanifest عُيوناًinto eyes
وَأَحَلَّهُand made it dwell حَدَقاًpupils وَجُفوناand eyelids
Who fashioned manifest magic into eyes
And made it dwell in pupils and eyelids?
نَظَرَتthey gazed فَحُلتُso I turned بِجانِبيwith my flank فَاِستَهدَفَتso they targeted
كَبِديmy liver وَكانَand was فُوادِيَmy heart المَغبوناthe wronged one
They gazed; I turned sideways, and they took aim at
My liver—yet my heart was the one wronged.
وَرَمَتand they shot بِسَهمٍan arrow جالَroamed فيهِwithin it جَولَةًa circuit
حَتّىuntil اِستَقَرَّlodged فَرَنَّthen rang فيهِwithin it رَنيناa ringing
And they shot an arrow that made a circuit within it,
Until it lodged, then rang out within it.
فَلَمَستُso I felt صَدريmy chest موجِساًapprehensive وَمُرَوَّعاًand terrified
وَلَمَستُand I felt جَنبيmy side مُشفِقاًfearful وَضَنيناand jealously protective
So I felt my chest, apprehensive and terrified,
And felt my side, fearful and jealously protective.
ياO قَلبُheart إِنَّindeed مِنَamong البَواتِرِthe cleaving swords أَعيُناًeyes
سوداًblack وَإِنَّand indeed مِنَamong الجَآذِرِthe wild-ox calves عيناwide-eyed ones
O heart, among cleaving swords are eyes—
Black ones—and among wild-ox calves are wide-eyed ones.
لاdo not تَأخُذَنَّever judge مِنَof الأُمورِthe matters بِظاهِرٍby an outward appearance
إِنَّindeed الظَواهِرَappearances تَخدَعُdeceive الرائيناthose who look
Never judge matters by appearances;
Appearances deceive those who look.
فَلَكَمfor how often رَجَعتُI returned مِنَfrom الأَسِنَّةِthe spearpoints سالِماًunharmed
وَصَدَرتُand I came away عَنfrom هيفِslender القُدودِfigures طَعيناpierced
For how often I returned unharmed from spearpoints,
Yet came away from slender figures, pierced.

ذَهَبُgold الأَصيلِof late afternoon حَواشِياًmargins وَمُتوناand expanses
And a lush grove upon the island, touched
By late-afternoon gold along its margins and expanses.
كَالتِبرِlike gold dust أُفقاًin horizon وَالزَبَرجَدِand chrysolite رَبوَةًin hill
وَالمِسكِand musk تُرباًin soil وَاللُجَينِand silver مَعيناin flowing water
Like gold dust at its horizon, chrysolite on its hill,
And musk in its soil, and silver in its flowing water.
وَقَفَstopped الحَياthe rain مِنfrom دونِهاbefore it مُستَأذِناًasking leave
وَمَشىand walked النَسيمُthe breeze بِظِلِّهاin its shade مَأذوناgranted leave
The rain stopped before it, asking leave,
And the breeze walked in its shade, granted leave.
وَجَرىand flowed عَلَيهاalong it النيلُthe Nile يَقذِفُcasting فَضَّةًsilver
نَثراًin scattered drops وَيَكسِرُand shatters مَرمَراًmarble مَسنوناpolished
And the Nile flowed past it, casting silver
In scattered drops, and shattering polished marble.
يُغريit entices جَوارِيَهُits maidens بِهاtoward it فَيَجِئنَهاso they come to it
وَيُغيرُهُنَّand makes them jealous بِهاof it فَيَستَعليناso they rise high
It lures its maidens toward it, and they come to it;
And makes them jealous of it, so they rise aloft.
راعَstartled الظَلامُthe darkness بِهاin it أَوانِسَmaidens تَرتَميflinging themselves
مِثلَlike الظِباءِgazelles مِنَfrom الرُبىthe hills يَهويناthey plunge down
Darkness startled maidens there, flinging themselves
Like gazelles, plunging down from the hills.
يَخطُرنَthey stride proudly فيin ساحِcourtyards القُلوبِof hearts عَوالِياًas lances
وَيَمِلنَand they sway فيin مَرأىthe sight العُيونِof eyes غُصوناas branches
They stride through the courtyards of hearts as lances,
And sway, before the eyes, as branches.
عِفنَthey spurned الذُيولِthe trains مِنَof الحَريرِsilk وَغَيرِهِand other than it
وَسَحَبنَand they trailed ثَمَّthere الآسَmyrtle وَالنَسريناand wild roses
They spurned trains of silk and other cloth,
And there trailed myrtle and wild roses.
عارَضتُهُنَّI crossed their path وَليand I had فُؤادٌa heart عُرضَةٌvulnerable
لِهَوىto the love of الجَآذِرِwild-ox calves دانَit ruled فيهِin it وَديناand was ruled
I crossed their path, with a heart vulnerable
To love of wild-ox calves; in love it ruled and was ruled.
فَنَظَرنَso they looked لاnot يَدرينَthey knew أَذهَبُwould I go يَسرَةًleftward
فَيَحِدنَso they might turn aside عَنّيfrom me أَمor أَميلُI turn يَميناrightward
So they looked, not knowing whether I would go left,
So they might avoid me, or whether I would turn right.
وَنَفَرنَand they scattered مِنfrom حَوليaround me وَبَينَand amid حَبائِليmy snares
كَالسِربِlike a herd صادَفَencountered فيon الرَواحِthe evening journey كَميناan ambush
And they scattered from around me, amid my snares,
Like a herd that met an ambush on its evening journey.
فَجَمَعتُهُنَّso I gathered them إِلىinto الحَديثِthe conversation بَدَأتُهُI began it
فَغَضِبنَso they grew angry ثُمَّthen أَعَدتُهُI repeated it فَرَضيناso they were pleased
So I drew them together into the conversation I began;
They grew angry; then I repeated it, and they were pleased.
وَسَمِعتُand I heard مَنthe one whom أَهوىI love تَقولُsaying لِتُربِهاto her same-aged companion
أَحرىmore fitting بِأَحمَدَfor Ahmad أَنthat يَكونَhe be رَزيناcomposed
And I heard the one I love say to her companion:
“Ahmad would do better to be composed.”

فَلَعَلَّso perhaps لَيلىLayla تَرحَمُwill have mercy on المَجنوناMajnun (the madman)
She said, “I see him at the height of his passion;
So perhaps Layla will have mercy on Majnun.”
