You have a motorcar in the neighborhood,

the talk of every neighbor, man and woman.

    An Overland—you are told

    about it by Consul Tammara.

    Like Charlotte's motorcar,

it is a tyrant over the driver.

When he sets it moving, it leans

    to either side, collapsing.

    And sometimes it grows balky,

and sometimes moves all by itself.

    No spring can satisfy it,

    even one gushing gasoline.

Nor can its thirst for oil be quenched,

even if a mouse swims in it.

You see the street in terror

when it appears from the alley,

    and boys clamoring

as when they encounter an airplane.

At its front there is a horn,

and at its rear a whistle.

For it may move whenever it pleases,

and may reverse of its own accord.

God has decreed for the driver

that he make it his home.

He spends his day inside it,

and reaches night without having visited home.

Is the world of horses, O Maksi,

as treacherous as the world of people?

Time has indeed changed your lot

    from good fortune to adversity.

    فَنَفسُ الحُرِّ صَبّارَه

    So be patient, O young gallant of horses;

for the noble soul is long-suffering.

    Is it true that Mahjub

has forgotten you for an earthenware pot,

    and sold the noble piebald

    for a clamorous Overland?

He did not acknowledge his merit,

    nor value his deeds.

He has chosen al-Shalh for you,

though you would never have chosen it.

    عَسى يُنبيكَ أَخبارَه

    Ask him, then, what al-Shalh is;

perhaps he will tell you its story.

As though you had never carried the banner

on the day of terror and pageantry,

    nor ridden into peril,

    nor charged in the raid,

    nor turned toward the wounded

    among the boy spectators:

one struck by a machine gun,

    another felled by a pistol.

No, by God, you never burdened

    Mahjub or his bar.

For you know nothing of clover,

nor do you know its blossoms.

You may drink your fill at Sult's

when you carouse with his night companions,

and you may grow drunk on a lovely maiden,

a hard drinker upon the sidewalk.

And you may be sated, O son of the night,

by the ringing of a lyre.

    May God, who led

    a caravan to Joseph—

and in their wake there lay a life

of greatness for him on earth—

    provide you with a Hawwar,

generous and a son of Hawwara.

    For fortune is ever wandering,

and the earth is ever turning.
