A house upon the earth and sky of guidance,

Truth is its wall and the foundation of its structure.

Conquest is among its emblems, and purity among

Its qualities, and Jerusalem among its names.

Its shoulders bend tenderly over the branches of guidance,

And its portal overlooks its Sinai.

Who is it that contests with us the keys to its gate,

And the majesty of its portal and the purity of its courtyard?

And Muhammad prayed within its precincts,

And welcomed the gracious faiths within its bounds.

And today the funeral gathering on its earth has gathered the people,

And the festival in its heaven has assembled the angels.

O Jerusalem, prepare a hillock among your gardens

For the guest of your soil, and celebrate his reception.

He is one of God's swords—exalted is His majesty—

Or one of India's swords at his passing.

The Prophet opened to him the resting place of his Buraq,

And the stairways of honor from his Night Journey.

A hero, with the rights of the East among his burdens,

And the cause of Islam among his responsibilities.

Beloved India did not make him forget tenderness

For the East, or vigil over its affairs.

And his robe is woven by Indians; I wonder whether

They buried the leader shrouded in his robe.

The Nile remembers his voice in times of crisis,

And the Turks do not forget the sincerity of his striving.

Tell the leader Muhammad: grief has descended

Upon the Nile and taken possession of its plain.

So it walked to you with its eyelid and its tears,

And to your brother with its heart and its consolation.

    وَلَوِ اِنتَظَرتَ حَواكَ في أَحشائِهِ

    You crossed it, so it embraced you at its edges;

And had you waited, it would have embraced you within its inward parts.

And indeed it had grown accustomed to your passing through its land

As a cloud passes, with its shade and its water.

Sleep beside God; you are no stranger

In the shade of a house of which you are a son.

    Conquest, itself a sacred cause—

Oh, how long you struggled in defense of its banner!

Your burial in the mistress of cities was decreed

By a mufti who sought God through his ruling.

A city whose most generous sons' palaces

And graves are endowed for its guests.

Indeed, you lived supporting it and granting its people

Aid—so how could you be among its strangers?
