وَدَمعٌ لا يُكَفكَفُ يا دِمَشقُ
A greeting gentler than the breeze of Barada,
A cool greeting from youthful Sabā,
And tears that cannot be wiped away, O Damascus.
And tears that cannot be stemmed, O Damascus!

جَلالُ الرُزءِ عَن وَصفٍ يَدِقُّ
And an apology from the pen and rhymes:
Excuse the prosody and rhymes wrought by caprice,
The enormity of the calamity defies description.
Grandeur has rendered description most difficult.

And remembrance, through whose stirrings my heart
Memories stir my heart to you,
Forever turns toward you and throbs.
An eternal turning, and fluttering.

The nights have wounded me, inflicting
Wounds that lie deep within my heart.
In my heart gashes of great depth.

I entered you when the late afternoon was radiant,
I came to you while the noble had great pride,
And your face was open, its features smiling.
Your face of radiant features shone bright.

And rivers flowed beneath your gardens,
Under your branches rivers flow,
And your hills were filled with leaves and gray doves.
Your landscapes filled with leaves and tender plants.

And around me were radiant, handsome youths,
Around me young men, a morning’s glory,
They had the highest attainments in excellence and led the way.
Foremost in merit, virtues and precedent.

Smooth-tongued poets fill their gatherings,
And within their frames, fluent orators.
And eloquent orators fill their cheeks.

Reciters of my poems—marvel, then, at verse
Reciters of my poems – how strange that poetry
That people recite in every quarter.
Should be recited by each tribe and clan!

I prodded their proud defiance until
I jab their dignity until the noses of lions wrinkle,
The lions' nostrils flamed, and their tail-tips blazed.
And stir the pride of each free and noble soul.

And every free man roared with defiance,
News came from God making
Proud, with nobility from Umayya within him.
The Governor’s ears suffer what they'd not suffered before.

Itemized in letters the news spreads,
To a friend's ears with tidings hard to bear.
Summarized in reports the news flashes.

The post recounts them to the world in detail,
Given the enormity, it could be thought
And the telegraph sends their summary to the horizons.
Mere myths yet it was truth manifest.

تُخالُ مِنَ الخُرافَةِ وَهيَ صِدقُ
So terrifying are the events within them,
It was said the landmarks of history were erased,
They almost seem fables, though they are true.
That loss and burning had brought it to ruin.
وَقيلَand it was said مَعالِمُthe landmarks التاريخِof history دُكَّتْwere leveled

And it was said: history's landmarks were leveled;
Are you not, O Damascus, a bosom-mate to Islam,
And it was said: destruction and fire befell them.
And nurturer of nobility, rightly guided?

Are you not, Damascus, a foster-mother to Islam?
Saladin’s crown – none fairer than it ever graced you.
And a wet nurse's parental bond must not be dishonored.
No decoration was richer than this.

Salah al-Din is your crown; no head was ever adorned,
Each civilization that graced the world
Nor graced with anything finer than he.
Had from your lofty splendor a share.

You built a great state and a kingdom –
And your earth a parchment of history's adornments.
The dust of their civilization cannot be swept away.

You built the great state and a kingdom
He had in Syria flags and wedding processions –
Whose two civilizations left all rivals behind in their dust.
Tidings of him resounded in al-Andalus.

Its glad tidings resound in al-Andalus.

Abodes of eternity—alas for you! What befell them?
Are the gardens' pavilions still luxuriously furnished?
Is it true they have been effaced—is it true?
Is their bliss as it was before?

Where are the palace ladies' flimsy robes,
And does their bliss still keep yesterday's order?
Torn and tattered?

And where are the doll-like beauties of the secluded chambers, amid bridal alcoves
They went out while the enemy lurked nearby,
Torn open, and curtains ripped apart?
And behind him chicks were pecking.

They emerged, with fire around the thicket,
When safety was pursued down one path,
And behind the thicket, nestlings were being fed.
Other paths led to death's door.

Whenever they sought safety by one road,
Nights of bombs and death –
Roads to death appeared before they could reach it.
Their skies snatched away in terror.

In a night of shells and death,
When iron clashed the sky reddened
Beyond whose sky were flashes and thunderbolts.
On its sides, and the sky darkened.

When iron stormed, one horizon reddened
Greet whoever guarded your weakness after decay –
Along its sides, and another horizon blackened.
Their courage firmer than rock.

أَبَينَ فُؤادِهِ وَالصَخرِ فَرقُ
Ask who terrified your graceful women after night had worn on:
The colonials, though they pretended gentleness,
Is there any difference between his heart and stone?
Had hearts hard as stones, knowing no tenderness.
وَلِلمُستَعمِرينَand the colonizers have وَإِنand even if أَلانواthey acted gently

And the colonizers, even when they act gently,
France betrayed you in reckless folly,
Have hearts like stones that never soften.
A war-monger, arrogant and stupid.

He struck you with his recklessness, and struck France too—
Whenever the seekers of truth and right approached,
A man of war, full of arrogance and folly.
It would say, ‘They are dissenters who rebelled and split.’

Whenever seekers of justice come to him,
The blood of rebels – France knows it
He says: 'A gang! They have rebelled and broken ranks.'
And knows it is a light and truth.

France knows the blood of revolutionaries,
And knows that it is light and truth.

It flowed upon her soil, bearing life,
Like the rain of heaven, and provision.
Like rain pouring from the sky, and bearing sustenance.

وَزالوا دونَ قَومِهِمُ لِيَبقوا
A land whose youths died so that it might live,
And parted from their people that they might endure.
And fell defending their people, so their people might endure.
Other nations gained freedom by its example –

And nations were freed by her spears;
How then can Syria still be colonized?
How, then, are they enslaved by her spears?

Are the titles of princedom, mere finery.
With titles of rulership, while they are bondage.

And how often an abject man shows you a haughty tilt of the neck,
Many a despised weakling seemed a catch
Like the neck that droops on a crucified man.
Like the tilt of the hanged man's neck.

Rifts in a kingdom arise, then pass away,
Sweets of power arise then pass away
But no rift heals among a people at odds.
But no sweetness goes to the dissenter.

I gave advice while we disagreed over rule
But in our sorrow we are all the East.
Yet all shared the same concern and affliction.

When lands disagree, still a unanimous statement and voice
A common eloquence and a common tongue.
Unite us if opinions differ.

You stand between death and life;
You stand between death or life –
So if you seek a lifetime of bliss, endure hardship.
If you seek the bliss of life, then revolt!

For homelands, in the blood of every free soul
A favor long bestowed and a debt now due.
A hand has volunteered, a duty calls.

While free men do not drink or sate themselves,

Nor rights made lawful or truth realized;

And in the captives, ransom and freedom for them.
And in captives, ransom and emancipation.

And the glory of the East begins with Damascus.
Glory of the East – Damascus comes first!

You supported your brother in his time of affliction
And every brother is entitled to his brother's aid.
And to support one's brother is a truth and duty.

Though they were punished for what they did not deserve.
Even if blamed beyond what they deserved.

Like the spring of purity – they grew harsh.

نِضالٌ دونَ غايَتِهِ وَرَشقُ
For every lioness and every cub,
For each lion cub and every young lion
