Worn out, without a stir in him,

Yet he quickens when he sees you.

And he sways with rapture whenever

You sway, O branch of the arak tree.

Indeed, beauty has clothed you in

The leaves of loveliness it has bestowed on you.

And you sprouted between my ribs,

And the heart watered you with its blood.

O giver of sweet promises, when will you keep them?

I wonder, will you fulfill them—I wonder?

For every word, if you granted

Permission, I would kiss your mouth for its sake.

It drew its sweetness from your

Sweet front teeth and from your lips' dusky hue.

    لَم يَجنِ إِلّا مُقلَتاك

    Unjustly I say that love has done wrong;

Only your two eyes have done wrong.

They became the death of whomever

You saw, and you became the desire of whoever saw you.
