بدأ الطيف بالجميل وزارا

يا رسول الرضى وقيت العثارا

The specter began with beauty and visited,

O Messenger of consent, and avoided mistakes.

خذ من الجفن والفؤاد سبيلا

وتَيَمَّم من السويداء دارا

Take from the eyelids and heart a way,

And seek refuge in the White Land a house.

أنت إن بت في الجفون فأهلا

عادة النور ينزل الأبصارا

If you stay in the eyelids, you are welcome,

The habit of light descends into sights.

زار والحرب بين جفنى ونومي

قد أعد الدجى لها أوزارا

He visited while war was between my eyelids and sleep,

Darkness had prepared for it burdens.

حسن يا خيال صنعك عندي

أجمل الصنع ما يصيب افتقارا

Beautiful, O specter, your work for me,

The most beautiful work is what lacks need.

ما لربِّ الجمال جار على القلـ

ـب كأن لم يكن له القلب جارا

The Lord of Beauty has no neighbor over the heart,

As if the heart was not his neighbor.

وأرى القلب كلما ساء يجزيـ

ـه عن الذنب رقة وأعتذارا

And I see that whenever the heart suffers, it compensates it

For the sin, tenderness and apology.

أجريح الغرام يطلب عطفا

وجريح الأنام يطلب ثارا

The wounded lover asks for gentleness,

And the wounded people ask for revenge.

أيها العاذلون نمتم ورام السـ

ـهد من مقتليّ أمرا فصارا

O fault finders, you have slept while the nectar

Wanted from my killing something done.

آفة النصح أن يكون جدالا

واذى النصح أن يكون جهارا

The harm of advice is that it becomes an argument,

And the harm of advice is that it becomes public.

سألتني عن النهار جفوني

رحم الله يا جفوني النهارا

My eyelids asked me about the daytime,

May God have mercy on you, my eyelids, the daytime.

قلن نبكيه قلت هاتي دموعا

قلن صبرا فقلت هاتى اصطبارا

They said, we cry over it, I said, give me tears,

They said, patience, so I said, give me endurance.

يا لياليّ لم أجدك طوالا

بعد ليلى ولم أجدك قصارا

O nights, I did not find you long

After Layla, nor did I find you short.

إن من يحمل الخطوب كبارا

لا يبالى بحملهن صغارا

Whoever bears great worries

Does not care about bearing small ones.

لم نفق منك يا زمان فنشكو

مدمن الخمر ليس يشكو الخمارا

We did not get tired of you, O time, so we complain,

The drunkard does not complain about the tavern.

فأصرف الكأس مشفقا أو فواصل

خرج الرشد من أكف السكارى

So turn the cup away compassionately or moderately,

Sanity came out of the hands of the drunkards.

شعراء الزمان مهلا رويدا

إن في مصر شاعرا لا يجارى

Poets of time, gently, slowly,

There is a poet in Egypt who has no equal.

حاملا في الصبا لواء القوافي

مسترقا لملكة الأشعارا

Carrying the banner of verses in youth

Secretly stealing the kingship of poetry.

قد بلغنا أبا محمد النجـ

ـم كما يبلغ السُراة المنارا

We have reached Abu Muhammad Al-Najm

As the messengers reach the minaret.

نرتجى منه للديار اعتزازا

وجدير بأن يُعز الديار

We hope from him glory for the country

And he is worthy of glorifying the country.

ودَّع الصبر أمة ودعت عبا

سها المرتجى عشية سارا

Patience bid farewell to a nation that bid farewell

To its wish on the eve it departed.

بعثت إثره القلوب تراعيـ

ـه وترعى وتأخذ الأخبارا

After him, hearts watched over him

And watched over and got the news.

فأعدها قريرة يا بن توفيـ

ـق وهِّئ لقومك استبشارا

So bring them back happy, O son of Tawfiq

And prepare for your people the good news.

أنت في نضرة الثلاثين كسرى

قاتِلُ الدهر أو أجل وقارا

You are in the bloom of thirties like Chosroes

The killer of fate or of great dignity.

لتعيشنّ كالنجوم نراها

جاوزت وهي في الصبا الأعمارا

You will live like the stars we see

That exceeded while still in youth ages.

أفن إن شئت بالثواء الليالي

وإذا شئت أفنها أسفارا

Ruin if you want with the nights nights

And if you want, ruin them with journeys.

وجُب البر واركب البحر واسلم

إن للبدر في السرى أوطارا

Do good and ride the sea and surrender

The full moon has cycles in Sirius.

فإذا جئت ملكة تملك البر

رَ بيمنى وباليسار البحارا

When you come as a queen ruling the land

With the right and the seas to the left.

والقَ ما شئت من حفاوة شمس

تُكبر الشمس عرشها إكبارا

And rise as high as you want from the splendor of a sun

That magnifies its throne.

كلما ألقت الشعاع بأرض

شاطرتها العباد والأمصارا

Whenever it casts its rays on earth

It shared it with servants and cities.

وأحقُّ الأقوام بالعز قوم

يقدِرون الأمور والأقدار

And most deserving of glory are people

Who value matters and destinies.

ورجال إذا سعوا للمعالي

ركبوا في سبيلها الأخطارا

And men, when they aspired to glories

They rode for it dangers.

لا يبالون بالحوادث ربحا

حملت في بطونها أم خَسارا

They do not care about incidents, whether

It carried in its interior gain or loss.

جمعوا المجد والمفاخر طرا

وجمعنا صغائرا وصغار

They collected glory and pride fully

While we collected small and trivial things.

إنما يبلغ الذي بلغوه

من حذا الحذو واقتفى الآثارا

None can reach what they have reached

Except those who emulated and followed their tracks.

وسما للعلى سموّ أبى

يأنف الهون منزلا وقرارا

And he soared to the Highest like my father

Who disdained baseness of abode and dwelling.

وإذا ما العزيز ساس بلادا

علّم المجد أهلها والفخارا

And when the honorable ruled countries

He taught its people glory and pride.

كوكب الآمان صبح التمنى

كلما همت الخطوب أنارا

The star of security, the dawn of wishes

Whenever worries intended illuminated.

نحن رضوان في جوارك يا عـ

ـباس لا زلت للعناية جارا

We are Ridwan in your neighborhood, O Abbas
