    I heard that a peacock

    came one day to Solomon,

    dragging, before the birds' delegation,

    his hems and sleeves,

and showing his plumage at times,

and hiding his feathers at others.

    أَظُنُّ أَوانَها آنا

    He said, “I have a request;

I think its time has come.

And here I have come to present it

at the thresholds of our lord.

Am I not the garden, with flowers

    and blossoms adorned?

Have I not attained every mark of elegance,

    in forms and colors?

Have I not become, at your gate,

    sovereign over all the birds?

Then how can it be fitting that we remain—

my splendid kin and I—as idols?

For, as for sweetness of voice,

my share of it has become deprivation.

So I have never enthralled hearts,

    nor intoxicated ears.

And of these birds, even the lowliest

adds to the lovesick one's sorrows.

And kings are stirred by it

    whenever it shakes branches.”

    Then Solomon said to him:

“Indeed, what has been has been.

    Exalted is the Creator's wisdom,

and His handiwork is great in glory.

You have indeed belittled, O conceited one,

    God's bounty, out of ingratitude.

And you paid no heed to kingship over the birds,

    out of pride and insolence.

For if you had a voice,

you would never speak to a human.”
