    O sister of Andalusia, peace be upon you.

    The caliphate and Islam have fallen away from you.

    The crescent descended from the sky; would that the sky

    were folded away, and darkness covered all the worlds.

    It was debased and driven from its zenith by

    a fate that casts down the full moon at its fullness.

    Two wounds with which the two nations journey on:

    this one bleeds, and that one will not heal.

    Through you both the Muslims were stricken, and in you both

    the reed pen was buried and the keen sword hidden away.

    The mourning for her has not ended, and here is another mourning

    in which they donned black for you and stood.

    Between her fall and yours there passed

    the days, amid what we love and hate.

    The centuries passed like a night, and there ended

    the states of conquest, as though they were dreams.

    فَإِذا غَفَلنَ فَما عَلَيهِ مَلامُ

    Time never fails to warn the kingdoms;

    if they grow heedless, no blame falls upon it.

    Macedonia, the Muslims are a clan:

    how fare the maternal kin and paternal uncles within you?

    Do you see them humbled, when in their might

    and their eminence Islam once strutted proudly?

    When you were the lion's fang, every battalion

    that rose against you was prey and food.

    وَتَغَيَّرَ الساقي وَحالَ الجامُ

    The days kept passing until you were transformed;

    the cupbearer changed, and the goblet changed.

    Have you seen how the lions of Shara were vanquished,

    and witnessed how the thickets were laid open?

    وَهَلِ المَمالِكُ راحَةٌ وَمَنامُ

    They claimed you were a wearisome burden upon the caliphate;

    but are kingdoms rest and sleep?

    وَأَراكِ سائِغَةً عَلَيكِ زِحامُ

    Some say you were the most ill-omened watering-place;

    yet I see you sweet to drink, with crowds thronging you.

    بِالمُلكِ مِنهُم عِلَّةٌ وَسَقامُ

    Ignorant people see you as the disease of sovereignty;

    yet from them come sovereignty's illness and sickness.

    Had they preferred reform, you would have been for their throne

    a pillar raised above the crowns of the stars.

    A delusion with which they shackle one another:

    the shackles of this world are delusions.

    Blindness takes many forms; the ugliest is when

    heads look through eyes other than their own.

    One may indeed rise again from the swords, but there is no

    rising from the lapses in a people's morals.

    To a herald of peace I said, 'Perhaps it

    is good; may the dreams come true.'

    The two sides abandoned fighting, and this

    is a barren peace, more bitter than fighting.

    A messenger announces the king's death to us, though he has trodden no

    earth, nor have feet carried him anywhere.

    وَمِنَ البُروقِ صَواعِقٌ وَغَمامُ

    A telegram whose far-ranging tidings are all thunderbolts;

    and among lightning flashes are thunderbolts and rainclouds.

    أَو كانَ خَيرٌ فَالمَزارُ لِمامُ

    If evil visits, it never departs;

    or if good comes, its visit is fleeting.

    Yesterday Africa turned away, and there ended

    a mighty dominion around the great sea's neck.

    أَصبَحنَ لَيسَ لِعَقدِهِنَّ نِظامُ

    The crescent strung four kingdoms upon it;

    now their necklace has no string.

    From the conquests of Hashim or Umayya, none had laid waste

    their foundations—not Tatars, nor non-Arabs.

    لا نَقضَ فيهِ لَنا وَلا إِبرامُ

    Today God's decree rests upon Macedonia;

    there is no annulling or ratifying it for us.

    فَعَلى بَني عُثمانَ فيهِ سَلامُ

    It was the remnant in the West, and it has passed away;

    so farewell to the sons of Uthman there.

    The cities and villages were seized by their throats

    by a vast army of the allies.

    The earth veiled the expanse and its air with it,

    and the hills clothed their shoulders in it.

    Horrors march before its cavalry,

    wherever it marches, along with oppression and crime.

    Priests urge it on in the name of the Book,

    zealous for what the Book forbids.

    And rulers over kingdoms—there have been subjected

    to them the peoples, as though they were livestock.

    Every butcher among them seeks the foremost seat in

    the council of kings, though his grandfather was a shepherd.

    His knife, his right hand, his belt,

    and the scepter—all are sins.

    Jesus, your path is mercy and love

    throughout the worlds, and protection and peace.

    You were no shedder of blood, nor a man

    who held the weak and orphans cheap.

    O bearer of suffering on behalf of this mankind,

    its sufferings have multiplied in your name.

    You are he who made all people

    one family, yet in your name kinship ties are severed.

    Judgment Day came under Yusuf's rule,

    and today, in your name, it is enacted twice over.

    How often the kings' hunting stirred him and stirred them,

    with horsemen and banners evenly matched.

    وَالسَلمُ عَهدٌ وَالقِتالُ زِمامُ

    Oppression is a vile deed in every faith;

    peace is a covenant, and warfare a rein.

    هُم لِلإِلَهِ وَروحِهِ ظُلّامُ

    Today bands raise cries in the name of the cross;

    they are grievous wrongdoers against God and His Spirit.

    كُلٌّ أَداةٌ لِلأَذى وَحِمامُ

    They have mingled your cross with daggers and knives;

    each is an instrument of injury and death.

    Do you not see how they slaughtered their neighbors

    among the houses, as though they were sheep?

    How many a suckling, in the lap of his bliss, awoke

    to weaning upon the edges of swords.

    And a young girl whose grove of purity was violated,

    and the sheaths scattered from its blossom.

    And an eighty-year-old whose dignity was profaned:

    neither frailty nor the years availed him.

    And a thirsty war-wounded man whom they buried alive; no

    bloody wound or burning thirst moved them to compassion.

    And emigrants whose homelands grew strange to them:

    they lost the way in bewilderment and wandered.

    وَالنِطعُ إِن طَلَبوا القَرارَ مُقامُ

    The sword is their path if they take to flight;

    the execution mat their abode if they seek to stay.

    وَاللَحظُ ماءٌ وَالدِيارُ ضِرامُ

    They look back, bidding farewell to their homes;

    their gaze is water, and their homes a blaze.

    O nation in Faruq, whose people were sundered by

    a fate that makes minds reel when it arrives!

    Why this mutual abandonment among you, while behind you are

    nations whose rights are lost, and who are oppressed?

    في الرُزءِ لا شِيَعٌ وَلا أَحزامُ

    God is my witness: I have not been partisan;

    in calamity there are neither factions nor bands.

    If I call for harmony, I am a poet

    whose utmost wish is love and harmony.

    Whoever resents affliction can do no more

    than return to fate and surrender.

    For the outcomes, let none of you blame

    another; decrees have long dealt unjustly.

    فَالحَمدُ مِن سُلطانِها وَالذامُ

    The nights judge against a man or in his favor;

    praise and blame arise from their dominion.

    It is history's custom: its judgments are filled with

    justice, and both its quivers with arrows.

    What a drawn Indian-steel sword cannot repel,

    neither books nor pens can repel.

    Those who won mighty conquests

    entered the thickets among the lions and slept.

    صَبراً وَصَفحاً فَالجُناةُ كِرامُ

    This is what your forefathers wrought against you;

    be patient and forgive, for the offenders were noble.

    ما لِلبِناءِ عَلى السُيوفِ دَوامُ

    They raised the building upon the sword, and it did not last;

    no building upon swords has permanence.

    The most enduring kingdoms are those founded on knowledge,

    with justice as their wall and buttress.

    If your affairs proceed with wisdom and good fortune,

    walk by the light of knowledge, for it is a rein.

    فَالمَجدُ كَسبٌ وَالزَمانُ عِصامُ

    Abandon boasting of your heritage, however prized;

    glory is earned, and Time is Isam.

    Conceit, when it possesses a nation,

    is like a blossom hiding death—swift, fatal death.

    Let nothing rival sovereignty in your desires:

    no passing worldly prize that appears, no mere chaff.

    Nor offices out of their proper place, as when

    idols took the place of exemplars.

    Sovereignty is the rank of peoples; if there is lost

    the dignity of independence, then peoples are grazing livestock.

    Among beasts are the well-fed and pampered,

    and even a bit and bridle can be made of silk.

    Time has placed you in a position like Tariq's:

    despair behind, and hope ahead.

    Here are patience and bold advance; if both

    are slain, retreat is deadlier than either.

    The guide reckons how far his aims extend, but

    the bold man does not reckon the reach of the future.

    This remnant, if you guard it carefully, is a state

    through which al-Rashid wielded power and Hisham rose high.

    The portion of imams and caliphs before you

    on earth—no other portions equaled it.

    Prophethood coursed through its pure expanse,

    and revelation and inspiration walked upon it.

    The two rivers surged through it, and there flourished

    Baghdad and al-Sham beneath its shade.

    فَالدُرُّ لُجٌّ وَالنُضارُ رَغامُ

    Its shores grew rich and its land grew fertile;

    so pearls are a sea, and gold is dust.

    Honor, Edirne! Thus does the sanctuary stand

    against the enraged, and feet remain firm.

    وَيَموتُ دونَ عَرينِهِ الضِرغامُ

    Land taken with blood is reclaimed with blood;

    the lion dies defending his lair.

    Sovereignty is seized or won back, and always

    one sword inherits dominion over lands from another.

    A warrior defended the honor of the caliphate,

    fighting for God, valiant in the Messenger's cause.

    Homelands seek protection behind his blade-points,

    and banners stand proud around his spear.

    Uthman, in his two cloaks, shields his army,

    and Ibn al-Walid stands guard over the sanctuary.

    Time knew where my thanks belonged, and there came

    to him Time's gratitude and reverence.

    Patience, Edirne! Every sovereignty passes away

    one day, while the All-Knowing Sovereign remains.

    The call to prayer grew faint; no monotheist upon your soil

    goes forth, nor are the lovely Friday prayers held.

    The mosques faded, once a unifying light

    toward which lions and gazelles walked.

    They step gently within prayer's sanctuary, devout,

    white-robed, as though they were doves.

    The conquerors' graves were effaced, and pried from

    the caliphs' grave-pits were boulders and stone-heaps.

    They were rifled despite their unyielding grandeur, just as

    the pyramids were rifled despite their towering height.

    History is answerable for five months

    that dragged on for you, each day a year.

    وَالسَيلُ خَوفٌ وَالثُلوجُ رُكامُ

    The sword is bare, pestilence unleashed;

    the flood a terror, the snows heaped high.

    Hunger is murderous, and amid it are companions

    who, had they not hungered in the struggle, would have fasted.

    عِرضُ الحَرائِرِ لَيسَ فيهِ سُوامُ

    They jealously guarded your honor against being bought and sold;

    freeborn women's honor admits no bargaining.

    The siege tightened, as though its rings were

    a celestial sphere, and their projectiles heavenly bodies.

    The foe hurled hellfire, and you hurled it back at them,

    of the kind God pours down, not peoples.

    وَكَذا يُباعُ المُلكُ حينَ يُرامُ

    You sold the enemy each span for a life's blood;

    thus sovereignty is sold when it is sought.

    Throughout the siege, between you and him stood

    towering fortresses, and bones their equals,

    until he held you as cemeteries, and you held him

    as corpses; so there is no unfair loss, nor any cause for blame.
