Congratulations, Commander of the Faithful, for indeed

your deliverance is the upright faith's deliverance.

Congratulations to Taha, the Book, and a nation

for which your survival is preservation and life.

You have exacted a pledge and covenant from the fates,

so you are not one whom harm can reach.

And whoever is in the Prophet's mantle and robe,

the missiles pass him by toward his enemies.

The House almost walks in gratitude to its Lord

toward you, and Arafat hastens, calling out.

And the mosques humbly beg for pardon,

and Friday congregations stretch out the palm of repentance.

    وَلَكِن سَقاها قاتِلونَ جُناةُ

    And the fertile earth seeks forgiveness, though it did no wrong;

    but murderous criminals watered it.

And the wounds of the injured praise you,

and prayers for you come from the slain.

You laughed at the terrors, then wept for them

with tears in whose wake mercies flowed.

By its precious worth rewarded, by its purity recompensed,

until Resurrection, are their torn limbs and remains.

    فَما ماتَ قَومٌ في سَبيلِكَ ماتوا

    And you could not restore them to life, so entrust them to their Lord;

for those who died in your cause have not truly died.

They were shot with treachery's arrow during their prayers

by a band of evil, enemies of prayer.

    أَأَتباعُ عيسى ذي الحَنانِ جُفاةُ

    Jesus and his companions disavowed them;

are the followers of compassionate Jesus hard-hearted?

    لَقَد كَذِبَت دَعوى لَهُم وَشُكاةُ

    They oppose a faith, not a state;

their claim and complaint have indeed proved false.

And there is no good in the world or in its rights

if seekers of rights are called transgressors.

With what heart do you face terror so steadfastly,

while the hearts of all humankind lack steadfastness?

When the earth around you shook, it was tamed

by your composure, until every quarter grew still.

And if a fire erupted and became Hell,

fed on the bodies of humankind and sustained,

and a deep sea and a city shook because of it,

and districts and regions burned in its heat,

you walked in the mantle of God's Friend and plunged into it,

with the engulfing perils around you all peace and coolness.

And you went forth, with coats of armor filling the earth,

while your armor was a humble heart and prayer,

smiling while all forms of death scowled,

dignified while all forms of doom were tyrants.

If their vigilance fails the guards, you are protected

    by guardian angels from God.

You gesture with a radiant face like Ahmad's,

before which all creatures' eyes fall back.

It greets the subjects; divine decree, exulting,

greets it, and the destinies offer apologies.

Your deliverance is a splendid blessing from God,

for which gratitude and alms are incumbent on you.

So turn its praise, Commander of the Faithful,

into glorious deeds that revive the earth when it lies dead.

If nothing of your presence has been lost to us,

then the hopes of souls shall not be lost.

We have known you with swords and spears ever wakeful,

when slumber brought proud kings to ruin.

You kept vigil while sleep was sweet, though it is death

to subjects ruled by caprice, and to shepherds.

    وَلَولاكَ شَملُ المُسلِمينَ شَتاتُ

    But for you, the Muslims' dominion would be squandered;

and but for you, the Muslims' unity would be scattered.

Their banners have vanished, save one,

whose brand is victory and whose markings are conquests.

It remains through the ages bright-blazed and noble,

with white-footed campaigns beneath its shade,

a banner of the upright faith, strengthened and exalted

by thirty kings, conquerors and warriors.

Among them, it was guarded and exalted through the ages

by kings preeminent above their age's sovereigns:

clouds pouring rain in years of drought,

lamps that guide through the night of doubts.

    لَها رَغَباتُ الخَلقِ وَالرَهَباتُ

    It swayed in peace, circling within your shelter;

toward it turn humankind's desires and fears.

The beasts of the air die hungry before it,

while the souls and hearts of humankind live on.

You ordained that Time be fair in its people's affairs,

so it grew content within your reach, and they did too.

    وَأَنتَ سِنانٌ وَالزَمانُ قَناةُ

    Thus you are a raincloud, and Time a leafy grove;

and you are a spearhead, and Time a spear shaft.

And you are peace's mainstay when its pillar sways

and its trusted custodians fear for it.

Was anyone but you suited to this task,

when the years have made it easy for you?

And whoever governs the world for thirty years

is aided in governing it by wisdom and deliberation.

You have captivated Ibn Hani, Commander of the Faithful,

through excellence that holds minds captive.

And I have remained the Hassan of this station, and you have never ceased

to be my patron, while gracious breezes flow from you to me.

I renounced what lies in your palms, and was drawn to

    the rewards sought with God.

And one who, like me, is the Ahmad of the age may not accept

alms, even from someone like you.

And mine are pearls of virtue in praise and love,

while al-Mutanabbi has a pearl and a pebble.

A nation survived when you survived; deliverance came to

lands, and the throne's life was prolonged.

And the majesty of sovereignty was preserved, its glory extended,

and beauty and good deeds continued to grace it.

And in the lands' east and west, security was assured

to orphans in their sustenance, and to those seeking alms.

    عَلَيكَ سَلامُ اللَهِ وَالبَرَكاتُ

    My greeting falls short of this occasion;

upon you be God's peace and blessings.
