سَمِعتُI heard أَنَّthat فَأرَةًa female mouse أَتاهاhe came to her
شَقيقُهاher brother يَنعىannounces the death of لَهاto her فَتاهاher boy
I heard that a mouse was visited
I heard that a mouse was mourned by
By her brother, bringing her news of her boy's death,
Her brother, grieving for her lost one
يَصيحُcries out ياalas ليfor me مِنbecause of نُحوسِill fortune بَختيmy luck
مَنwho سَلَّطunleashed القِطَّthe cat عَلىupon اِبنِthe son of أُختيmy sister
Crying, 'Alas for my wretched luck!
Crying “Woe is me, what misfortune is mine,
Who set the cat upon my sister's son?'
Who set the cat upon my sister's son?”
فَوَلوَلَتso she wailed وَعَضَّتِand she bit التُراباthe earth
وَجَمَعَتand she gathered لِلمَأتَمِfor the mourning gathering الأَتراباthe age-mates
So she wailed and bit the earth,
She wailed and bit the dust
And gathered her peers to mourn.
And gathered dirt for the funeral rites
وَقالَتِand she said اليَومَtoday اِنقَضَتended لَذّاتيmy pleasures
لاno خَيرَgood ليfor me بَعدَكَafter you فيin الحَياةِlife
And said, 'Today my pleasures have ended;
Saying “Today my pleasures have ceased
Life holds no good for me after you.
No good is left for me in life
مَنwho ليfor me بِهِرٍّwith a cat مِثلِlike ذاكَthat الهِرِّthe cat
يُريحُنيrelieves me مِنof ذاthis العَذابِthe torment المُرِّbitter
Who will bring me a cat like that cat,
Who will comfort me like that comforter
To relieve me of this bitter torment?'
Who relieved me of such bitter pain?”
وَكانَand was بِالقُربِnearby الَّذيthe one whom تُريدُshe wants
يَسمَعُhears ماwhat تُبديshe expresses وَماand what تُعيدُshe repeats
And the one she wanted was nearby,
And he was near enough to hear
Hearing what she voiced and what she repeated.
All she said and repeated clear
فَجاءَهاso he came to her يَقولُhe says ياO بُشراكِgood news for you
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthe one whom دَعَوتِyou called for قَدindeed لَبّاكِanswered your call
So he came to her, saying, 'Oh, good news for you!
So he came saying “Good news to you
Indeed, the one you called for has answered your call.'
The one for whom you called has come to you”
فَفَزِعَتso she took fright لَمّاwhen رَأَتهُshe saw him الفارَهthe female mouse
وَاِعتَصَمَتand she took refuge مِنهُfrom him بِبَيتِin the house of الجارَهthe female neighbor
So the mouse took fright when she saw him,
But when she saw the mouse, she shuddered in fear
And took refuge from him in her neighbor's house.
And took refuge in a neighbor's home
وَأَشرَفَتand she peered out تَقولُshe says لِلسَفيهِto the fool
إِنif متُّI die بَعدَafter اِبنيmy son فَمَنthen who يَبكيهِwill weep for him
And peered out, saying to the fool:
Saying from above “If after my son I die
'If I die after my son, then who will weep for him?'
Then who will be here to mourn and cry?”
