حَبَرت مقالة جمعت فأوعت

وجاءت في سبيل الحق غاية

وجاءت في سبيل الحق غاية

You penned an article that gathered and encompassed all,

You composed an article, collected and comprehended,

And it reached the utmost in the cause of truth.

That came in pursuit of the truth and purpose.

شفيت غليلنا ودفعت عنا

شفيت غليلنا ودفعت عنا

وقمت بمنتهى فرض الكفاية

وقمت بمنتهى فرض الكفاية

You quenched our burning thirst and defended us,

It quenched our thirst and warded off from us,

And fulfilled the communal duty to the utmost.

And you fulfilled the ultimate obligation.

فر زالت سهامك صائبات

فر زالت سهامك صائبات

على رغم الوشاية والسعاية

على رغم الوشاية والسعاية

So may your arrows keep striking true [opening unclear],

So your arrows continued hitting their mark,

Despite slander and malicious denunciation.

Despite the slander and scheming.

ففي صدر المقطم قد قرأنا

ففي صدر المقطم قد قرأنا

سطورا خطها قلم الغواية

سطورا خطها قلم الغواية

For on the front page of Al-Muqattam we have read

For in the heart of Al-Muqtam we read,

Lines inscribed by the pen of misguidance.

Lines written by the pen of misguidance.

وفي صدر المؤيد قد تلونا

وفي صدر المؤيد قد تلونا

بحمد الله آيات الهداية

بحمد الله آيات الهداية

And on the front page of Al-Mu’ayyad we have recited

And in the heart of Al-Mu'ayyad we recited,

With praise to God, verses of guidance.

By the grace of God, verses of guidance.

يصدِّعنا المقطم كل يوم

يصدِّعنا المقطم كل يوم

ويزعجنا بإعلان الحماية

ويزعجنا بإعلان الحماية

Al-Muqattam gives us headaches every day,

Al-Muqtam saddens us every day,

And alarms us by proclaiming the protectorate.

And disturbs us by declaring protection.

وينذرنا بويل بعد ويل

وينذرنا بويل بعد ويل

على ويل كما نعق أبن دايه

على ويل كما نعق أبن دايه

And warns us of woe after woe,

And warns us of woe after woe,

On top of woe, as Ibn Dāyah the crow cawed.

Upon woe, as the son of Daihah wails.

فمهلا فيلسوف الشر مهلا

فمهلا فيلسوف الشر مهلا

فإن لكل نازلة نهاية

فإن لكل نازلة نهاية

So, easy now, philosopher of evil—easy!

So wait, O philosopher of evil, wait,

For every calamity has an end.

For every situation has an end.

لقد كشف المؤيد عنك سترا

لقد كشف المؤيد عنك سترا

وأظهر للملا بطل الرواية

وأظهر للملا بطل الرواية

Indeed, Al-Mu’ayyad has lifted a veil from you,

Al-Mu'ayyad has uncovered your veil,

And revealed the play’s protagonist to the public.

And shown the defects of the narrator.

فمثِّل غير هذا الدور واعلم

فمثِّل غير هذا الدور واعلم

بأن اللورد قد قطع الجراية

بأن اللورد قد قطع الجراية

So play another role, and know

So take on a role other than this, and know

That the lord has cut off the stipend.

That the Lord has cut off your salary.
