The wedding songs became an echo of wailing,

And your death was announced amid the signs of rejoicing.

You were shrouded on the wedding night in its garment,

And buried at the brightening of dawn.

In panic, you were borne to your grave with a laughing man's tear,

In every quarter, and a sober man's stupor.

Minarets and pulpits clamored over you,

And kingdoms and regions wept over you.

India is distraught, and Egypt sorrowful,

Weeping for you with a streaming eye.

And the Levant asks, and Iraq and Persia:

Has an obliterator erased the caliphate from the earth?

And the august Fridays came to you as a mourning assembly,

And sat there in the mourners' seats.

O men, come to the aid of a freeborn woman buried alive,

    Slain without offense or sin.

Indeed, those whose war healed your wounds—

Their peace has killed you without wounds.

With their own hands they tore the mantle of their pride,

Embroidered with the gifts of the Opener.

They removed from necks the finest necklace,

And stripped from shoulders the finest sash.

A noble heritage beyond the reach of the long passing nights

Has fallen between an evening and a morning.

And a bond, the loops of its cords now snapped,

Had been the most faithful of bonds between souls.

It united those present in righteousness, and at times

United in it the innermost hearts of those far away.

It ordered the ranks of Muslims and their steps

    Every Friday morning and evening.

Prayer wept; this is the strife of one who trifles

With sacred law, a brazen drunkard in judgment.

He issued a nonsense ruling and uttered error,

And brought blatant unbelief into the lands.

Indeed, those upon whom his jurisprudence was imposed

Were made for the understanding of battalions and arms.

If they speak, they speak through mute battalions,

Or, when addressed, they hear through deaf spears.

I ask morality's forgiveness; I do not disown

The man I once defended and argued for.

Why do I collar him with blame, when so often

I have garlanded him with the memorable words of my praise?

    He is a kingdom's pillar and a state's wall,

And champion of a steel-gray host, a ram that locks horns.

Shall I call the one who revived the community an atheist,

And call the one who restored rights a libertine?

Truth is more deserving of reverence than your friend,

And more deserving than you of support and struggle.

So praise men according to truth, and blame them,

Or leave the role of sincere advisers aside.

And among men, when you set out to demolish them,

Is a pyramid, thick-shouldered with broad stone slabs.

Then, if you hurl truth against his sides,

He leaves the struggle with his slabs shaken.

Convey counsel to the Ghazi; he will heed it.

Indeed, the noble steed returns after bolting.

    كَيفَ اِحتِيالُكَ في صَريعِ الراحِ

    Indeed, vanity has plied the leader with its wine;

How can you deal with one laid low by wine?

He moved laws, beliefs, and villages,

And people, as battalions are moved on the battlefield.

A nation left him like a deified phantom,

One that had not yet forsaken the worship of phantoms.

They gave him a free hand among them, like Caesar,

    Until he seized everything forbidden.

The crowds' obedience beguiled him, and a state

For which the masses felt a contented love.

And if you draw glory from an unlettered populace,

You are given nothing but its glittering mirage.

Who will speak to the Muslims a word

Inspired by nothing but sincere counsel?

My pledge to the caliphate is its foremost defender,

Guarding its pool with overflowing eloquence.

A love for God Himself, it was and still remains,

And a passion for truth itself and reform.

I am indeed the lamp; I am not so lost

As to become the lamp's moth.

Adham's campaigns were crowned with slender lances,

And Anwar's conquests were studded with sword blades.

Their swords have passed away, and their lances departed,

But my reed pen's sharp points do not depart.

Do not bestow the Prophet's mantles on a helpless man,

Unarmed, defending them with his palms.

Yesterday he weakened the Muslims with a wound,

And today he offers them the surgeon's hand.

Then in every land you will surely hear a caller,

Calling to the Liar or to Sajah.

And in every land you will surely witness strife,

In which religion is sold at a bargain price.

Legal rulings are issued according to al-Mu'izz's gold and sword,

And the whims of souls and their relentless rancor.
