مُصابُthe calamity of بَنيthe children of الدُنياthis world عَظيمٌgrievous بِأَدهَمِthrough Adham's loss
وَأَعظَمُand greater مِنهُthan it حَيرَةُthe bewilderment of الشِعرِpoetry فيin فَميmy mouth
The loss of Adham is grievous for the people of this world;
The calamity that befell Bani al-Dunya is immense for Adham
and greater still is poetry's bewilderment in my mouth.
Yet greater than it is the confusion of poetry in my mouth
أَأَنطُقُshall I speak? وَالأَنباءُand the tidings تَترىcome in succession بِطَيِّبٍwith joyful news
وَأَسكُتُand shall I fall silent? وَالأَنباءُand the tidings تَترىcome in succession بِمُؤلِمِwith painful news
Shall I speak when tidings of joy come in succession,
Shall I speak as good news arrives
and fall silent when tidings of pain come in succession?
Or keep silent as painful news arrives
أَتَيتُI came بِغالٍwith precious verse فيin الثَناءِpraise مُنَضَّدٍarrayed
فَمَنwho, then ليfor me بِغالٍwith precious verse فيin الرِثاءِlament مُنَظَّمِstrung
I came with precious verse arrayed in praise;
I came with effusive praise in verse
who, then, can give me precious verse strung into lament?
So who will give me apt elegy in rhyme
عَسىmay الشِعرُpoetry أَنto يَجزيrepay جَريئاًa valiant man لِفَقدِهِfor his loss

May poetry repay a valiant man, for whose loss
May poetry reward the audacity of this loss
the Turks and the Greeks wept with tears and blood.
The Turks and Greeks cried with tears and blood
وَكَمand how many مِنof شُجاعٍa brave man فيamong العِداةِfoes مُكَرَّمٍhonored

And how many a brave man is honored among his foes,
So many honored among the enemies
and how many a coward is reviled among his peers.
So many disgraced among the cowardly

And can the racing of rhymes toward a goal avail,
Can the flow of rhyming words serve any purpose
when the black steeds of death have slain Adham?
When the arrows of death have struck Adham
رَمَتshot فَأَصابَتand so struck خَيرَthe best رامٍmarksman بِهاwith them العِدىthe foes

They shot and struck the finest archer to loose death upon his foes;
They aimed and hit the best archer among them, the destined arrow
and the arrow serves only inexorable fate.

A hero who was an Indian sword in human form,
He was the epitome of young men with Musk Dhigam
and was the hero of heroes in a lion's hide.

Those envious of his glory reproached him for his daring,
Triumph was created but for the audacious
yet good fortune was created only for the bold.

Ask Milouna about him, and what lies in its ravines
And the eagles and vultures on its peaks
and on its twin peaks—vultures and bones—
Nights when religion was not held in one fist
لَيالِيَon nights باتَspent the night الدينُthe faith فيin غَيرِno قَبضَةٍgrasp

on nights when the faith was held in no firm grasp,
And every Muslim’s faith was shaken
and every Muslim was shaken in his faith.
Some said the last of eras of the caliph

And some said, 'We have seen the last of the leaders,'
And doubts crept regarding divvied inheritance
and conjectures turned to the partitioned inheritance.
So he rose like a star for Islam and the kingdom

Then he raised for Islam and the kingdom a star
A victory in deep darkness full of doubt
of victory in a pitch-dark night of doubt.
And we boasted to East and West of might

And we went forth vying with East and West in glory,
When we were the talk of gloating adversaries
though we had been the talk of the gloating and the pitying.

Glorious deeds are recorded in history to Adham's credit,
He who lends history profits and gains
and whoever lends to history profits and reaps rewards.

When it was blooming with Zamzam’s roses?
black, while those coming to drink have choked on Zamzam's water?
Did pilgrims come to lament Khaled

And have the riders come announcing Khalid's death
To every intending pilgrim in ihram?
to every caster of ritual pebbles and pilgrim in ihram?

And is there a mosque where you recite his elegy?
When so many recite his praises in chanting?
For how often you have chanted his praise!

And when he waded among spearheads and sword-blades,
All deferred until the valiant knight passed
they drew aside until the armored knight had passed.

And whoever is granted a respite in this lowly world
Lives long even if he meets wars and survives
lives long, even if he faces wars, and remains unharmed.

Ali, Abu al-Zahra, the master of battle,
His sword at the house door was struck by Ibn Muljam
was struck at the house's door by Ibn Muljam's sword.

Faruq, laugh and weep with pride and anguish,
And rise to the bier of the most venerated departed
and rise to the bier of the revered departed,
Like a martyr's mother who received news of him
كَأُمِّlike the mother of شَهيدٍa martyr قَدalready أَتاهاreached her نَعيُّهُnews of his death

like a martyr's mother who received news of his death,
So she wavered between weeping and smiling
and so hastened to him between weeping and smiling.
Prepare him a place between sultans

And mark out for him a resting place among the sultans,
A grave next to the leading conqueror
and a grave beside the Conqueror who went before.
You were miserly to him in life with procession

You withheld a procession from him in life;
So make amends to him in death with mourning gathering
so make amends to him in death with a mourning assembly.
O disease, how unfair that you shook his chest

And O disease, you were unjust when you terrified his breast,
When the kingdom, if shaking, would cling to him
though the kingdom sought refuge there whenever it was alarmed.
O you walking around his deathbed

And O you walking around his bier,
You have surrounded the eloquent history teller
you have surrounded a history that speaks eloquently.

And O Egypt, he whom you escorted to burial was loftiest in resolve,
And firmest heart of firmly rooted pillars
and firmer of heart than the immovable heights of al-Muqattam.

And O people, this is one for whose like they erect
An ideal for an ambitious learner
a statue for the learner seeking a model.

And O sea, you know the worth of the one you bear;
O land, protect him, O Lord, have mercy
and O earth, guard him; and O my Lord, have mercy.
