Stand for the teacher and accord him full reverence.
Honor the teacher and give him utmost respect
The teacher comes close to being a messenger.
The teacher is almost an apostle

Have you known anyone nobler or more exalted than one
Did you know anyone nobler than he
Who builds and shapes souls and minds?
Who builds and nurtures souls and minds

Glory to You, O God, the best teacher!
Glory be to You, O God, the Best Teacher
You taught the earliest generations through the pen.
Who taught the early generations with the pen

You brought this mind out of its darkness
Who brought this intellect out of its darkness
And guided it to the manifest light as its path.
And guided it to the clear light of the path

And You fashioned it through the teacher's hand, at times
Whom You imprinted through the teacher's hand sometimes
As rusted iron, and at times polished.
As rusty iron and other times as polished

You sent Moses with the Torah as a guide,
You sent Moses with the Torah as a guide
And the Virgin's son—so teach the Gospel.
And the Son of the Virgin, so teach him the Gospel

And You made Muhammad gush forth as a spring of eloquence;
And made the spring of eloquence gush through Muhammad
He gave his sayings to drink and handed out revelation.
Who quenched [people’s] thirst with the Hadith and presented the Quran

You taught Greece and Egypt, but both turned away
You taught Greece and Egypt but they declined
From every sun that would not set.
From every sun they wished to set

Today both have returned to a state of childhood
And today they have become childlike
In learning, seeking it as children.
Seeking knowledge from others shamefully

From the earth's east the suns shone forth together;
From the east of the earth suns have risen
Why has its west been given ascendancy over it?
Why does its west remain dark?

O earth, since the teacher lost himself,
O land, since the teacher lost himself amongst the suns
A barrier has been set between the suns and your east.
And your east, what tricks remain?

Gone are those who defended the truth of their knowledge
Those who carried the truth of their knowledge have gone
And found grievous torment sweet for its sake,
And deemed agony in it as sweet and fine

In a world where the wise accompanied life
To a single ruler, haltered and shackled by him.
Shackled by individuals and fettered in chains

The tyrant's world struck it down, just as heads fell
Vanquished by the despot’s world as heads fall
Dazed beneath the sun's blow.
From the strike of the sun, swinging giddily

Socrates gave the cup—death though it was—
Socrates gave the poisoned cup, eagerly sipping
A lover's lips, yearning to kiss.
The lips of a lover wishing for a kiss

They offered him life, but it was folly;
They offered him dishonorable life yet he refused
He refused and chose to die nobly.
And chose to die with honor and dignity

Courage may be abundant in hearts
But I have found few brave minds.
But courageous minds are few

Indeed, He who made truth bitter as colocynth
The One who created truth as He willed
Has left no generation without people of truth.
Did not deprive any generation of its people

May passion be slain! How many victims it has claimed!
But how many were killed out of passion?

Hatreds and vendettas among the masses?
And accumulated at the hands of the masses spite and grudges?

I would make Christ's crucifixion my proof.
I would have cited Christ's crucifixion as evidence

The heavy responsibility, held accountable

It swelled because of Dunlop and became an elephant.
And we threw at you, so you were the elephants

In knowledge, even if empires took miles

From the days of Khufu see no lamp

You find their pyramid builders’ descendants
Unable to fashion even a needle.
Cannot properly shape a needle

And are pampered if you want to lead them
Like lambs that grow tame at the sight of caresses.
Like dogs sympathetic if shown affection

Those who succeed are the fiercest of them in chanting.
And the most vicious of them are the most successful

Ignorance cannot sustain any community
How can there be life in Azrael's hands?
How can life be sustained at the hands of the likes of Ezra?

By God, if not for the tongues and intuitions
That circulated like wine among the keen minds of youth,
That rotated around the minds of the youths in complexity

They recognized the places of their infertility, so they followed
Overflowing like a spring and pouring like rainclouds,
Like the eye, a stream, and the rain, a channel

Raise the homeland's youths in fairness;
They nurtured the youths of ambition, you will find them
You will find them a refuge for rights in maturity.
As the cave of rights—matured and aged

It is he who builds integrity of character
And it is fairness that builds just souls,
And it is he who builds just souls

And corrects the logic of every twisted mind
And shows him sound judgment in affairs.
Showing him mature insight in matters

A feeble spirit of justice among the young.
In the youths walked feebly and frail

The visions came through him distorted and crooked

And if a people's morals are stricken,
And if a people were corrupted in morals
Hold a mourning rite for them, with wailing.
Hold for them a eulogy and cry in lament

In Egypt, the great assistance of mothers.
In Egypt of the great mothers' help

Men suckle ignorance and idleness.
Men suckled ignorance and idleness

An orphan is not one whose parents have passed
Life's troubles and left him abased,
Leaving him lowly, lost in life's worries

The orphan is he who gets instead
A mother who has deserted him, or a father preoccupied.
A mother who abandoned him or a busy father

Will find no equal to the great Saturday.
It would not find the Great Saturday an equal

That it will not be miserly toward the country.
It will not be stingy on the country

The harvest is near and easily obtained

And place a wreath upon his stones.
And place on their tombs a wreath
لِيَكونَso that it may be حَظُّthe share of الحَيِّthe living مِنof شُكرانِكُمyour gratitude
جَمّاًabundant وَحَظُّand the share of المَيتِthe dead مِنهُof it جَزيلاgenerous
So that the living man's share of your gratitude
So that the share of the living, from your gratitude
May be abundant, and the dead man's share of it generous.
Is plentiful, and the share of the dead, plenty
لاnot يَلمَسُfeels الدُستورُthe constitution فيكُمin you روحَهُits spirit
حَتّىuntil يَرىit sees جُندِيَّهُits soldier المَجهولاunknown
The constitution cannot feel its spirit in you
Let the constitution not touch in you its spirit
Until it sees its unknown soldier.
Until it sees its unknown soldiers
ناشَدتُكُمI adjure you by تِلكَthat الدِماءَblood زَكِيَّةًpure
لاdo not تَبعَثواsend لِلبَرلَمانِto Parliament جَهولاan ignoramus
I adjure you by that pure blood:
I implore you by those pure bloods
Do not send an ignoramus to Parliament.
Do not send to Parliament fools
فَليَسأَلَنَّso will surely ask عَنِabout الأَرائِكِthe seats سائِلٌa questioner
أَحَمَلنَhave they borne فَضلاًmerit أَمor حَمَلنَhave they borne فُضولاsuperfluity
For someone will surely ask about the seats:
Let a questioner ask about the seats
Have they borne merit, or merely useless excess?
Did they carry virtue or sin?
إِنif أَنتَyou أَطلَعتَput forward المُمَثِّلَthe representative ناقِصاًdeficient
لَمnot تَلقَfind عِندَat كَمالِهِhis fullest التَمثيلاrepresentation
If you put forward a deficient representative,
If you appointed an imperfect representative
You will find no representation even at his best.
You will not find the ideal represented through him
فَاِدعواso summon لَهاto them أَهلَpeople of الأَمانَةِtrustworthiness وَاِجعَلواand grant

So summon to those seats people worthy of trust, and give
So appoint people of integrity and give
Preference to those among them with insight.
Preference to the most insightful among them
إِنَّindeed المُقَصِّرَthe one who falls short قَدmay يَحولُchange وَلَنand will never تَرىyou find

لِجَهالَةِfor the ignorance of الطَبعِthe nature الغَبِيِّfoolish مُحيلاone who can change it
One who falls short may change, but you will never find
The negligent may reform but you will never see
Anyone who can change the ignorance of a foolish nature.
Reform from an ignorant disposition
فَلَرُبَّfor many a قَولٍremark فيabout الرِجالِmen سَمِعتُمُyou have heard
ثُمَّthen اِنقَضىpassed away فَكَأَنَّهُso as though it ماnot قيلاwas said
For many a remark about men you have heard,
For how many words of men you have heard
Which then passed away as though it had never been said.
Then vanished, as if never said
وَلَكَمand how often نَصَرتُمyou supported بِالكَرامَةِwith honor وَالهَوىand affection

And how often, with honor and affection, you have supported
And how many you have supported out of dignity and passion
One who had stood forsaken among you.
Who were, to you, the abandoned

كَرُمَwas noble الشَبابُthe young شَمائِلاًin character وَمُيولاand inclinations
Generosity and forgiveness dwell in youth, and often
There is grace and forgiveness in youth
The young have been noble in character and inclination.
The youth graced traits and tendencies generously

Rise, unite the fathers' generation, and raise
Come together, gather the people of fatherhood, and lift
The voice of youth, beloved and accepted.
The voice of youth, beloved and accepted
ماhow أَبعَدَdistant الغاياتِthe goals إِلّاbut أَنَّنيthat I

How distant the goals! Yet I
Only the determination I find in you
Find your steadfastness a guarantor of reaching them.
Makes me confident in it as guarantor
فَكِلواso entrust إِلىto اللَهِGod النَجاحَsuccess وَثابِرواand persevere
فَاللَهُfor God خَيرٌbest كافِلاًas guarantor وَوَكيلاand as trustee
So entrust success to God, and persevere;
Commit your success to God and persevere
For God is the best guarantor and trustee.
For God is the best patron and protector
