The tale of the dog and the dove

Bears witness to the nobility of both species.

It is said that one day the dog was

Among the gardens, sunk deep in sleep.

Then from behind him came the snake,

Puffed up, as though it were the devil.

    فَرَقَّتِ الوَرقاءُ لِلمِسكينِ

    And it meant to act treacherously against the faithful one;

So the gray dove took pity on the poor creature.

And descended at once to rescue the dog,

And gave him a peck, so he sprang up.

So he praised God for his safety,

    And remembered the dove's kindness.

    When some time had passed,

Then the owner came to the garden.

So the dog raced ahead to that tree,

To warn the bird, as it had warned him.

And made his barking a signal to it.

So the dove understood his message,

And took flight at once to escape,

So it escaped the flying lead unharmed.

This is kindness, O people of discernment:

People depend on people, and whoever helps is helped.
