    Time is wakeful, and events have not slept.

    So why do you slumber, O noblest of nations?

    Perhaps you are weary from waging war,

    And this is the lions' repose in the thickets.

    وَالفَتحُ يَعتَرِضُ الدَولاتِ بِالتُخَمِ

    You have indeed conquered, then turned away, sated;

    And conquest afflicts states with surfeit.

    Rise, taking yourselves and us toward glory in an age

    In which whoever is not a wolf is among the sheep.

    This age's events call out to you:

    O state of the sword, become a state of the pen.

    For the sword destroys at dawn what it built before daybreak,

    Yet every edifice of knowledge stands intact.

    وَسَوَّتِ الحَربُ بَينَ البَهمِ وَالبُهَمِ

    In peace, those with no judgment to protect them have perished;

    And war has made lambs and mighty warriors equal.

    مَن لا يُقِم رُكنَهُ العِرفانُ لَم يَقُمِ

    And knowledge has become the pillar of those who embrace it;

    He whose pillar understanding does not raise cannot stand.

    People trail the rich man's ample robe in delight,

    While we wear instead the tight garment of destitution.

    O Turkish youths, may God bless your countenances,

    And protect you and guide you to sincere service.

    You are the morrow of the realm and Islam; may both ever enjoy

    Through you the finest morrow, smiling in glory.

    Egypt gives you a place in her innermost heart,

    And proclaims abundant love, free of suspicion.

    For we, whether a dwelling lies far away or near,

    Are neighbors in the tongue of ḍād, or in the House and the Sanctuary.

    The bond of the East is kinship enough for you,

    And how fine the bond of Islam is as a family tie!

    وَالضادُ فينا بِشَملٍ غَيرِ مُلتَئِمِ

    Among the peoples, language communities stand united;

    Yet among us, the tongue of ḍād has a divided community.

    So draw us and yourselves closer together through it,

    For it is the firmest of bonds and covenants.

    And if we pursue success, we are all one hand,

    And our striving toward it is foot beside foot.

    So be neither Young Turkey nor

    That old woman; be the Turkey of old.

    For her sword remains her sword in every fray,

    And her justice has wreathed Islam in blessings.
