    وقربكم الزمان وما ينيل

    Your favor guarantees our bond for me;

    and nearness to you is Time and all it bestows.

    وشحناء المحبة لا تطول

    You forsook me; I endured for your sake, and you returned;

    and the rancor of love does not last long.

    You showed courtesy not to one deserving it, but

    chose a course—and it was gracious.

    And whenever I sought a replacement for you,

    with whom to reproach you, a replacement proved elusive.

    وإن الحافظين له قليل

    I preserved affection, though affection shifts;

    and those who preserve it are indeed few.

    ورأى لا تغيره أصيل

    And I kept guarding my faith in love;

    and an unchanging view is deeply rooted.

    ويا رسلي جميلكم الجميل

    So, O my letters, your favors are true favors;

    and O my messengers, your kindness is true kindness.

    And O my hope, I shall remember my long solace

    in your face, when my close friend left me lonely.

    And O my time, I gave thanks; and mine was

    a long forgetting of what had passed.

    And O my age, ascribed as you are to the one praised,

    yours are the splendid forehead-blazes and white leg-markings.

    ولكن خيرها هذا السبيل

    I see the paths of hope toward him are many;

    but this path is the best of them.

    Is it that whenever your resolve rises or takes a stand,

    the farthest draws near and the impossible yields?

    And you know that the envious harbor a sickness,

    and that their cure lies in speaking.

    فأهلا أيها القمر الجليل

    The houses have adorned themselves and made ready;

    so welcome, O majestic moon!

    The eye wishes its blackness could be increased,

    and that you might lodge within its two dark pupils.

    وللعبرات بالبشرى مسيل

    We rushed forward, our hearts bounding;

    and tears streamed at the glad tidings.

    So rejoice where all glory hastens,

    and where excellence, in all its fullness, inclines.

    And we stretch out the hands of whispered communion, as though we were

    night travelers stirred by the guiding star.
