فعد يا رسول الغادرين مخيبا

فعد يا رسول الغادرين مخيبا

فما كل من يُدعى إلى الغدر يهرع

So return disappointed, O messenger of the treacherous;

for not everyone called to treachery rushes to it.

For not all who are invited to betrayal rush headlong.

And tell the great ruler of the Persians that I rebuff him,

وما أنا بالباكي على ابني وقتله

وعرضي إن يسلم قتيل مضيع

And I am not one to weep over my son and his killing,

I am not one who weeps over my son and his killing,

when my honor, if he were spared, would lie slain and squandered.

If my honor is preserved though my slain are neglected.

وخير لجادي من حياة بذلة

وخير لجادي من حياة بذلة

ممات إلى أسمى ذى العز يرفع

ممات إلى أسمى ذى العز يرفع

And better for Jadi than a life of humiliation

Better for one with honor a life of humiliation,

is a death that lifts him to the most exalted Possessor of Glory.

Than a death raising him to the highest noble place.

وخير لقلب منه إن ذاق ناره

وفاء يذود النار عنى ويدفع

وفاء يذود النار عنى ويدفع

And better for a heart than that, if it tastes its fire,

And better for a heart, if it tastes its own fire,

is faithfulness that wards the fire away from me and repels it.

أبعد شباب قد تجمّل بالهدى

يُلاح لشيبي بالضلال فيتبع

After a youth adorned with guidance,

shall my gray hairs be lured by error and follow it?

Will you lure my old age with misguidance to follow?

وترغب نفسي في القلائد والغنى

وترغب نفسي في القلائد والغنى

وصدري بتقوى الله حال مرصع

وصدري بتقوى الله حال مرصع

And shall my soul covet necklaces and wealth,

My soul desires necklaces and wealth,

when my breast is adorned and jeweled with reverence for God?

While my heart is adorned with fearing God and refuses.

وأقبل أن أُعطَى بذل إمارةً

وأقبل أن أُعطَى بذل إمارةً

فأبنى بها جاهى وديني مضعضع

فأبنى بها جاهى وديني مضعضع

And shall I accept being given a governorship through abasement,

I would rather be given rule in order to gain power,

and build my prestige with it while my faith lies shattered?

And with it undermine my religion and faith!
