عواقب المرء في أخراه مجهوله

والنفس عما جنت لا شك مسئوله

والنفس عما جنت لا شك مسئوله

A person's fate in the life to come is unknown,

The consequences of a person at his end are unknown

and the soul is, without doubt, answerable for what it has committed.

And the soul is undoubtedly accountable for what it has reaped

يا نفس توبى فدار اللهو فانيةٌ

يا نفس توبى فدار اللهو فانيةٌ

حتما وما هيَ للذات مجعوله

حتما وما هيَ للذات مجعوله

O soul, repent, for the abode of diversion will perish,

O soul, repent, for the home of vanity is transient

inevitably, and it was not made for pleasures.

And it is certainly not created for the self

وكل نفس إلى الأخرى مسافرةٌ

وكل نفس إلى الأخرى مسافرةٌ

لكن على صفحة الأعناق محمولَه

لكن على صفحة الأعناق محمولَه

And every soul journeys to the other world,

Every soul travels towards another

yet is carried upon the backs of necks.

Yet each carries on the nape of its neck what it has sown

أرى النفوس من الآثام قد طهرت

أرى النفوس من الآثام قد طهرت

لكن نفسي على الآثام مجبوله

لكن نفسي على الآثام مجبوله

I see that souls have been cleansed of sins,

I see souls cleansed of sins

but my soul is by nature inclined to sin.

But my soul remains shackled by sins

وما أبرّيء نفسي من غوايتها

وما أبرّيء نفسي من غوايتها

كأنها من أجاج الجهل مغسوله

كأنها من أجاج الجهل مغسوله

Nor do I absolve my soul of its waywardness,

I cannot absolve my soul of its waywardness

as though it were washed with the bitter brine of ignorance.

As if it is washed with the turbid water of ignorance

يا ليت شعري هل قلبي يحدّثني

يا ليت شعري هل قلبي يحدّثني

بتوبة عند رب العرش مقبوله

بتوبة عند رب العرش مقبوله

Oh, if only I knew whether my heart would speak to me

Oh, if only I knew, does my heart speak to me

of repentance accepted by the Lord of the Throne,

Of repentance, accepted by the Lord of the Throne?

فأدخل الباب باب العفو مرتديا

فأدخل الباب باب العفو مرتديا

أثواب فضل على العورات مسدوله

أثواب فضل على العورات مسدوله

so I might enter the gate, the gate of pardon, wearing

That I may enter the door, the door of pardon, clothed

robes of grace draped over nakedness;

In robes of grace covering my disgraces

وأن أعيش قريرَ العين في دعةٍ

وأن أعيش قريرَ العين في دعةٍ

منها حياتي بحسن الحظ موصوله

منها حياتي بحسن الحظ موصوله

and live with eyes at peace, in ease,

That I may live contentedly and serenely at leisure

with my life thereby linked to good fortune;

With my life fortunately connected to goodness

وأن أرى الأهل والأبناء في سعة

وأن أرى الأهل والأبناء في سعة

فيدرك الكل من مولاه مأموله

فيدرك الكل من مولاه مأموله

and see my family and children in prosperity,

That I may see my family and children prosperous

so everyone obtains from his Lord what he hopes for;

With each attaining their hopes from their Lord

وأن أرى العفو مقرونا بعافية

وأن أرى العفو مقرونا بعافية

وعيشتي بالصفا والعز مكفوله

وعيشتي بالصفا والعز مكفوله

and see pardon joined with well-being,

That I may see pardon coupled with well-being

and my life assured of serenity and honor.

And my life secured with integrity and honor

يا رب حقق بجاه المصطفى أملى

يا رب حقق بجاه المصطفى أملى

فإنّ نعماك للمضطرّ مبذوله

فإنّ نعماك للمضطرّ مبذوله

O Lord, fulfill my hope by the standing of the Chosen One,

O Lord, fulfill my hope for the sake of the Chosen One

for Your bounty is freely bestowed on those in distress.

For Your blessings are bestowed on the desperate
