Were it not for Ali ibn Mahdi and his friendship,
Were it not for Ali the son of Mahdi and his companions,
we would never have found our way to wit or refinement.
We would not have been guided to refinement or literature.

بِأَنَّ غِلمانَنا خَيرٌ مِنَ العَرَبِ
When he serves brimming cups, he makes us imagine
When he serves goblets in the drinking area, he makes us imagine
that our boys are better than the Arabs.
That our boys are better than the Arabs.
