O Sa'd, I have withheld no affection from you.

You acknowledge it, and you deny it.

You gave me cause to complain, so I complained—not feigning a grievance.

And you claimed that, when I complained of you, I was envious.

And if I have been envied on your account, you are indeed one

on whose account kin and strangers alike have been envied.

And you claimed that I blame and reproach you,

and that my poems bear witness to my censure of you.

Then my character would be base, and he would go forth

with praise—one who stands, yet holds me down.

I censure you, O Sa'id, yet it is only

with glory from you that I vie in glory when I boast.

If your heart is divided in its love for me,

then my heart for you is one undivided heart.

Be as you wish, for I trust in you.

And even if I censure you, I am indeed one who praises you.
