يُكَلِّمُهاspeaks to her طَرفيmy gaze فَتوميand she signals بِطَرفِهاwith her gaze
يُكَلِّمُها طَرفي فَتومي بِطَرفِها
فَتُخبِرُthus she reveals عَمّاof what فيwithin الضَميرِthe heart مِنَof الوَجدِpassion
فَتُخبِرُ عَمّا في الضَميرِ مِنَ الوَجدِ
My gaze speaks to her, and she signals with hers.
My glance speaks to her glance, which hints with its glance,
Thus she reveals the passion within her heart.
Informing me of the passion hidden in her heart.
فَإِنbut if نَظَرَlooked الواشونَthe slanderers صَدَّتshe drew back وَأَعرَضَتand she turned away
فَإِن نَظَرَ الواشونَ صَدَّت وَأَعرَضَت
وَإِنand if غَفَلواthey paid no heed قالَتshe said أَلَستَare you not عَلىupon العَهدِthe pledge
وَإِن غَفَلوا قالَت أَلَستَ عَلى العَهدِ
But if the slanderers watch, she draws back and turns away.
If spies look on, she turns aside in disdain,
And if they pay no heed, she says, “Are you not true to the pledge?”
But if neglected, she says "Do you not recall your vow?"
