حُجِبتُI was barred وَقَدand indeed كَنتُI was لاnot أُحجَبُI am barred
وَأُبعِدتُand I was distanced عَنكَfrom you فَماso not أَقرُبُI draw near
I have been barred, though I was never barred before;
I am veiled though I was unveiled before
And kept far from you, so I do not draw near.
And kept away from you, yet how near!
وَماand not لِيَfor me ذَنبٌa fault سِوىexcept أَنَّنيthat I
إِذاwhen أَناI أُغضِبتُI was provoked لاnot أُغضَبُI am angered
And I have no fault except that I
My only sin is that if I'm provoked
Am not angered when I am provoked;
I do not flare, and that's not fair.
وَأَنand that لَيسَthere is not دونَكَother than you ليfor me مَرغَبٌan object of desire
وَلاand no دونَother than بابِكَyour door ليfor me مَذهَبُa place to go
And that I desire none but you,
I wish for none but you, I crave
And have nowhere to go but to your door.
No other path but yours, no other way
فَلَيتَكَso may you تَبقىyou remain سَليمَsecure المَكانِthe station
وَتَأذَنُand you grant entry إِنif شِئتَyou wish أَوor تَحجُبُyou bar entry
So may you remain secure in your station,
So may your place remain secure
And admit me, if you wish, or bar me.
Veil me or not, as you prefer
