إِنَّindeed المُفَضَّلal-Mufaddal نَقصُهُhis deficiency فيin نَفسِهِhimself
وَفِعالِهِand his deeds قَدindeed حَطَّdiminished فَضلَmerit أَبيهِhis father
Indeed, al-Mufaddal’s flaws in character
and conduct have diminished his father’s merit.
وَكَأَنَّand as though نَكهَتَهُhis breath رَوائِحُodors عِرضِهِhis reputation
فَجَليسُهُso his companion بِالنَتنِbecause of the stench فيin مَكروهِdistress
And his breath is like the odors of his reputation,
so his companion is distressed by the stench.
