إِذاwhen أَبوAbu (father of) أَحمَدٍAhmad جادَتgives generously لَناto us يَدُهُhis hand
لَمnot يُحمَدِare praised الأَجودانِthe two most generous البَحرُthe sea وَالمَطَرُand the rain
When Abu Ahmad's hand gives generously to us,
The two most generous—the sea and rain—go unpraised.
وَإِنand if أَضاءَتshine لَناupon us أَنوارُthe lights غُرَّتِهِhis brow
تَضاءَلَdiminish النَيِّرانِthe two luminaries الشَمسُthe sun وَالقَمَرُand the moon
And if the lights of his brow shine upon us,
The two luminaries, sun and moon, are diminished.
وَإِنand if مَضىtakes effect رَأيُهُhis judgment أَوor حَدُّthe edge عَزمَتِهِhis resolve
تَأَخَّرَfall behind الماضِيانِthe two inexorable ones السَيفُthe sword وَالقَدَرُand fate
And if his judgment or his resolve's edge takes effect,
The two inexorable powers, sword and fate, fall behind.
مَنwhoever لَمnot يَكُنbe حَذراًwary مِنof حَدِّthe edge صَولَتِهِhis onslaught
لَمnot يَدرِknow ماwhat المُزعِجانِthe two disquieters الخَوفُfear وَالحَذَرُand caution
Whoever is not wary of his onslaught's edge
Has not known the two disquieters, fear and caution.
حُلوٌsweet إِذاif دنتyou submit لَمnot تبعثis roused مَرارَتهhis bitterness
فَإِنbut if أَمَرَّhe turns bitter فَحُلوٌthen sweet عِندَهُbeside him الصَبِرُbitter aloes
He is sweet if you submit, his bitterness unroused;
But if he turns bitter, bitter aloes are sweet beside him.
سَهلُgentle الخَلائِقِin disposition إِلّاexcept أَنَّهُthat he is خَشِنٌrough
لَينُpliant المَهَزَّةِwhen shaken إِلّاexcept أَنَّهُthat he is حَجَرُstone
Gentle in disposition, yet he is rough;
Pliant when shaken, yet he is stone.
لاno حَيَّةٌserpent ذَكَرٌmale فيin مِثلِthe like of صَولَتِهِhis onslaught
إِنif صالَhe charges يَوماًever وَلاnor الصَمصامَةَthe Samsama sword الذَكَرُhard-tempered
No male serpent can match his onslaught,
If ever he charges, nor can the hard-tempered Samsama sword.
إِذاwhen الرِجالُmen طَغَتrun wild آراؤُهُمtheir opinions وَعَمواand grow blind
بِالأَمرِto the matter رُدَّis referred back إِلَيهِto him الرَأيُjudgment وَالنَظَرُand deliberation
When men's opinions run wild and they are blind
To the matter, judgment and deliberation are referred back to him.
الجودُgenerosity مِنهُfrom him عِيانٌseen firsthand لاno اِرتِيابَdoubt بِهِabout it
إِذfor جودُthe generosity كُلِّevery جَوادٍgenerous man عِندَهُbeside him خَبَرُa report
His generosity is seen firsthand, beyond all doubt;
For beside his, every generous man's giving is mere report.
