وَمَجلِسand a gathering لَذَّةٍof delight لَمnot نَقوَwe had strength فيهِin it
وَمَجلِس لَذَّةٍ لَم نَقوَ فيهِ
عَلىto شَكوىcomplain وَلاnor عَدِّcounting الذُنوبِthe wrongs
عَلى شَكوى وَلا عَدِّ الذُنوبِ
And a gathering of delight, where we had no strength
A gathering of delight, where we did not complain
to complain or reckon up wrongs.
Of sins, nor enumerate wrongs.
فَلَمّاso when لَمnot نُطِقwe could manage فيهِin it كَلاماًspeech
فَلَمّا لَم نُطِق فيهِ كَلاماً
تَكَلَّمَتِspoke العُيونُthe eyes عَنِon behalf of القُلوبِthe hearts
تَكَلَّمَتِ العُيونُ عَنِ القُلوبِ
So when we could not utter a word there,
When speech we did not utter in that place,
the eyes spoke on behalf of the hearts.
Eyes spoke for hearts in streams.
وَفيand in غَمزِsignaling الحَواجِبِthe eyebrows مُستَراحٌrelief
وَفي غَمزِ الحَواجِبِ مُستَراحٌ
لِحاجاتِfor the requests المُحِبِّof the lover إِلىto الحَبيبِthe beloved
لِحاجاتِ المُحِبِّ إِلى الحَبيبِ
And in the signaling of eyebrows lies relief
With eyebrows' hints found there a refuge
for the lover's requests to the beloved.
Lovers' needs for the beloved.
