عَلى أَنَّهُ مِنها أَحَرُّ وَأَوقَدُ

عَلى أَنَّهُ مِنها أَحَرُّ وَأَوقَدُ

And a day like the fire of longing in a lover's heart,

And a day like the fire of longing in a lover's heart

Though it was hotter than that fire and more fiercely blazing.

Though from it I am hotter and more inflamed

ظَلِلتُ بِها عِندَ المُبَرِّدِ قائِظاً

ظَلِلتُ بِها عِندَ المُبَرِّدِ قائِظاً

فَما زِلتُ مِن أَلفاظِهِ أَتَبَرَّدُ

فَما زِلتُ مِن أَلفاظِهِ أَتَبَرَّدُ

I spent the day there with al-Mubarrid in the summer heat,

I lingered with her by the ice-cold camp

So I kept cooling myself with his words.

Yet from her words I could find no warmth
