لَيسَ المُروءَةُ في الثِيابِ وَبطنَة

لَيسَ المُروءَةُ في الثِيابِ وَبطنَة

إِنَّ المُروءَةُ في نَدىً وَصَلاحِ

إِنَّ المُروءَةُ في نَدىً وَصَلاحِ

Nobility of character lies not in clothes or a full belly;

Honour's not in clothes or in a lining

Indeed, nobility of character lies in generosity and righteousness.

وَتَرى الفَتى رَثَّ الثِيابِ وَهَمُّهُ

وَتَرى الفَتى رَثَّ الثِيابِ وَهَمُّهُ

طَلَبُ المَكارِمِ في تُقىً وَصَلاحِ

طَلَبُ المَكارِمِ في تُقىً وَصَلاحِ

And you see a young man in threadbare clothes, whose concern

And you see the young man in ragged clothes

is the pursuit of noble virtues in piety and righteousness.
