وَذوand one possessing المالِwealth قَدmay يُغرىbe drawn بِهِto him كُلُّevery مُعدَمِpenniless man
وَذو المالِ قَد يُغرى بِهِ كُلُّ مُعدَمِ
They reckon I have wealth, and so they envy me.
They imagine I have wealth, and so they envy me,
And every penniless man may be drawn to a man of wealth.
Yet he with riches can be tempted by each destitute one.
وَلَوyet if حَسِبواthey counted ماليmy wealth طَريفيmy newly acquired wealth وَتالديand my inherited wealth
وَلَو حَسِبوا مالي طَريفي وَتالدي
وَقَرضيand my loans وَفَرضيand my allotment لَمnot يَكُنbe نِصفhalf دِرهَمِa dirham
وَقَرضي وَفَرضي لَم يَكُن نِصف دِرهَمِ
Yet if they counted my wealth, newly acquired and inherited,
If they but knew my wealth was my wit and my offspring,
And my loans and my allotment, it would not amount to half a dirham.
Along with what I owe and must pay, it would not be half a dirham!
