البُحتُرِيُّ إِذا فَتَّشتَ نِسبَتَهُ

البُحتُرِيُّ إِذا فَتَّشتَ نِسبَتَهُ

في بُحتُرٍ كَحَبيبٍ في بَني ثُعَلِ

في بُحتُرٍ كَحَبيبٍ في بَني ثُعَلِ

Al-Buhturi, if you scrutinize his lineage,

When you investigate al-Buhturi's lineage

Is of Buhtur as Habib is of the Banu Thuʿal.

In Buhtur like a beloved among the clan of Tha'labah

كِلاهُما يَتَظَنّى عِندَ نِسبَتِهِ

كِلاهُما يَتَظَنّى عِندَ نِسبَتِهِ

وَقَلبُهُ مِن تَظَنّيهِ عَلى وَجَلِ

وَقَلبُهُ مِن تَظَنّيهِ عَلى وَجَلِ

Each relies on conjecture when declaring his lineage,

They both have misgivings about his lineage

And his heart is full of dread because of his conjecture.

And his heart is anxious because of these suspicions
