لحىmay curse اللهGod أوقاتيmy hours وضاعفand multiply منof صبريmy patience
علىat مرِّهاtheir passing مرَّlike the passing of السَّحابthe clouds بالقطرِwith rain
May God curse my hours and multiply my patience
May God lengthen my life and double my patience
as they pass like clouds bearing rain.
As the clouds pass by with rain
تحاربنيwage war on me الأيامthe days حتىuntil كأنَّنيas though I
تطالبنيthey demand from me عنfor كلِّevery منone who ماتdied بالوترِfor blood vengeance
The days wage war on me, until it is as though
The days battle me as if
they demand blood vengeance from me for everyone who has died.
They demand compensation for all those who died young
عددتI counted أويقاتيmy brief hours ولاحظتُand I noted طيبهاtheir sweetness
فأجودهاso the best of them ماwhat مرَّpassed فيin الحلمdreams منof دهريmy lifetime
I counted my brief hours and noted their sweetness;
I counted my times and noticed their goodness
so the best were the hours of my life that passed in dreams.
The best of them passed in the dream of my life
إذاwhenever رحتُI set about أحصيهاI count them لأعلمso I may know يسرهاtheir ease
عدمتI lost حياتيmy life والمصيرand the outcome إلىtoward عسرِhardship
Whenever I set about counting them to know their ease,
When I go to count them to know their ease
I lose my life, and the outcome is hardship.
I miss my life and the fate to hardship
متىwhen ماever اعتبرتَyou reckon العمرlife ماwhat كانwas صافياًuntroubled
تجدyou find رجلاًa man قدindeed عاشhas lived عمراًa lifetime بلاwithout عمرِa life
Whenever you count as life only what was untroubled,
Whenever you consider life for what was pure
you find a man who has lived a lifetime without a life.
You will find a man who lived a lifetime without life
وهاand here أناI فيin طيِّthe folds of اللياليthe nights معدِّدٌcounting
كواكبهits stars منfrom حيثwhere لاno حاسبٌreckoner يدريknows
And here I am, within the folds of the nights, counting
And here I am in the darkness of nights counting
its stars, where no reckoner knows the count.
Its stars from where no reckoner knows
كأنِّيas though I فيin همِّيmy distress مدىthroughout الليلthe night راكبٌriding
علىon فلكa celestial sphere نائيfar-off المدىthe reach أبداًforever يسريjourneys by night
It is as though, in my distress, I ride throughout the night
As if in my worry throughout the night I am riding
on a far-reaching celestial sphere that journeys forever.
On a far reaching orbit forever travelling

إلىtoward اللَّوحthe Tablet كيso that أقراI read بهon it سورةthe surah of اليسرِease
I set out earnestly, ascending, my resolve directed
I ascend in glory and my determination
toward the Tablet, to read upon it the surah of Ease.
Is to the tablet to read it the surah of ease
وأحفظهاand I memorize it منfrom جبهةٍa brow شمْتُI glimpsed نورهاits light
علىdespite بعدهاits distance قدرُthe measure of الكواكبthe stars والبدرِand the full moon
And I learn it by heart from a brow whose light I glimpsed,
And keep it from the essence I smelled its light
despite its distance, the equal of the stars and the full moon.
From its distance the extent of planets and the full moon
