    فليس ينفع في أشواقك العذلُ

    Pardon your recklessness, for you are still young;

For reproach avails nothing against your longings.

    Twenty-seven years—had they passed over a mountain,

That mountain would have gone strutting proudly because of them.

Within them I lived a youth that, had it been sought

By Ridwan in Paradise, would have defied his every stratagem.

    فلو حوتها عقودٌ زانها العطلُ

    A well-strung strand, like pearl necklaces set in order;

Were necklaces to hold it, its unadorned beauty would grace them.

Drunk, I brim with the wine of youth—but not

With wine's drunkenness, whose effects the drunkard laments.

For I have pleasures in which I delight:

My wine is sweet saliva, and my apples are kisses.

I embrace the bough with a moon within its sleeves,

And kiss the full moon, with languor in its limbs.

If the sun alighted one day in our quarter,

The Ram would go mourning her in his grief.

Or if the full moon met, in my presence, my nightly companion,

Beside him, it would be seized by embarrassment and shame.

Days when I never endured patience to its end,

Nor said, 'If only my eyelid would start to stream!'

They passed: their clear joy in life was never clouded,

Not for a day; nor did their shade of safety shift.

The years toy with them as they go about their affairs, just as

Hope toys with a young man's heart in his day.
