    فليتهم حكموا بالعدل إذ حكموا

    I made them rulers in my heart, as they decreed;

If only they had ruled justly when they ruled.

    Or would that we had endured, submissive to them;

Or would that they had shown mercy when they took charge of our affairs.

They were unjust; had they known that, under their rule, I was

Docile to the rein, they would not have been unjust or oppressive.

They withheld their company from us; had they known

The sincerity of our love, I think they would have regretted it.

They themselves exposed us to their affliction through nearness to them,

Until, when they saw our approach, they grew weary.

We had built them a dwelling in the heart,

Lofty—until, once it was raised, they demolished it.

They thought of us something other than what our inmost thoughts conceal,

And God rejects what they imagined, as does nobility.

How far are fault and deficiency from my honor!

I am the Pleiades; those two are gray hair and decrepitude.

I saw that they never tired of two traits of theirs,

And wretched are those two traits: treachery and boredom.

I left them, and in every limb I had

A tongue and a mouth of mine complaining against them.

And if you depart from people who could have ensured

That you would not leave them, they are the ones who departed.

O distant ones, whom remembrance of us has brought

An affliction—may no pain touch you after this.

You committed wrong, then went off heedlessly; and is it

Justice that the offender should reproach and commit wrong?

You were without fault, except that

Blood had tainted your water for those who drank.

I marveled at you; your character holds a marvel:

How did master and servants become equal among you?

You stripped away benefit, until your seeker thought

That the one who had assumed your leadership was an idol.

    إنَّ الوفاء لدى أهل النُّهى ذممُ

    You betrayed, while we remained faithful in loving you;

Fidelity, among people of reason, is a matter of binding pledges.

I was Yusuf when, like his brothers, you sold

Me for a pittance—a youth for whom prices soar.

No guilt is mine in what you referred to the slanderers; and has

A litigant any guilt if the arbiter is unjust?

If love for your company brings us together,

Would that we shared in proportion to that love.

Is this the judgment of those I leave unnamed:

That I am charged with sincerity in loving you?

If a youth's love is reckoned a sin against him,

Then I, indeed, am marked with hatred.

    وإنَّما تعشق الأخلاق والشِّيمُ

    You claimed that we loved your manners;

But only character and innate qualities are loved.

Which of the two groups is more faithful in your eyes: people

Who loved and did not hide it, or a company who hid it?

You could not discern which were the pale hawks among you,

While crows and vultures had surrounded you.

And what benefit does a man of this world gain from his eye

If lights and darkness are alike to him?

You neglected the bonds of affection; make the most

Of your neglect, for it is something that cannot be restrung.

Today you bolted from the paths of fidelity; neither

The pull of reins nor bridles can turn you back.

You kept belittling me, rather than your household,

Until I seemed a sickness within your eyelids.

Between me and you lies a dark, trackless wilderness

Born of your betrayal, uncrossed by swift-striding she-camels.

    وسوف يبلغ شأوه النَّدمُ

    You were ignorant of the worth of my kindness and my knowledge;

And remorse will yet reach its full extent.

I am the one whose poetry the blind man has seen,

And my words have made the deaf hear.

I appear, and whoever speaks ill of me bows,

As though I were a standard above my enemies' necks.

I pardoned you—not because I accepted from you

An excuse, but because proud dignity is my soul's way.

So summon your sons, that we may invoke God's curse against one another,

Or do not; for in this we appeal to fairness.

    فراح يهجوكم القرطاس والقلمُ

    You cheapened the price of my poetry in praise of you;

So paper and pen began to satirize you.

I sleep to my eyes' content; I do not reproach you,

And brown spears keep vigil for my sake and clash.

    A wrong whose recompense is an everlasting stain upon you;

And the worst thing a person earns is what disgraces him.

Who will make you understand that mankind, regarding you,

Is split in two: one half mocking, the other taking vengeance?

How deserving we were of honor from you,

Had your conduct been close to ours!

You forsook us, and we forsook you, acting fairly; and in

Reason's deeds, unlike mankind's deeds, there is wisdom.

    وليس للأُسد إلا الغاب والأجمُ

    The covert grew too narrow for you, O gazelles, because of us;

And lions have only forests and thickets.

What have I to do with your white gazelles, that I should mingle with them?

And in drawing close is that which invites suspicion.

I parted from you: my heart did not go on blazing

With longing, nor did my eye hold steady rains within its lids.

Ask, and you will learn my state, and what

Ambitions wrought in my breast after parting from you.

And what my heart has become through its turnings,

And my eye—how sleep came crowding into it.

Our slanderer has done us a favor; may his foot never stumble,

Nor carry him toward estrangement from us.

What I once beheld has grown paltry in my eyes,

As though my waking life in your company were a dream.

    فصرت أعجب من حظِّي وأبتسمُ

    For a time I wept over my lot with you;

Now I marvel at my lot and smile.

I have taken to lamenting you, not because I grieve,

But to let my people know that you are decayed remains.

I sought your company until I found you,

Even when I made much of you, one and the same as nothingness.

I went away, my patience's edges still unnotched,

And returned with my heart cold and chilled.

Indeed, I swear by the forgetfulness of you my heart contains—

An oath, beside which I have no other oath—

You have seized upon my absence from your gatherings,

Though nearness to you is no prize among people.

I used to suppose that the house was your house,

And that your honor was a sanctuary shielded from mankind,

And that I was your slave—until I saw you had

A slave who wrongs his master and flees.

It was not for me to be seen sharing bondage

With an evil slave through whom free men are oppressed.

    وتلك عاقبة القوم الذي عموا

    You went blind to those who loved you, so ill befell you;

Such is the fate of people who went blind.

    I enchanted these pearls until I fashioned them into words;

Do not think that what lies among you is mere words.

Had the delicacy of the words not deceived you,

You would have said: they are polished, keen-edged swords.

May God not care for whoever did not care for our friendship,

Nor care for a pasture where livestock grazed.
