Whose is this dwelling, its landmarks effaced?
The ruins whose flags time has erased
The succession of days has erased it.
Forgotten as eras come to pass
لاnot نرىwe see فيهin it منany أنيسcompanion سوىexcept
لا نرى فيه من أنيس سوى
الصبرpatience وحسنand the pleasantness of الأنيسcompanionship بالآرامwith the gazelles
الصبر وحسن الأنيس بالآرام
We see no companion in it save
With nothing left of joy but patience
Patience, and pleasant company with gazelles.
And the calm comfort of a friend
جارacted unjustly فيin حكمهits rule علىagainst ساكنيهits inhabitants
جار في حكمه على ساكنيه
وعليهand against it البلىdecay بغيرwithout احترامrespect
وعليه البلى بغير احترام
Decay ruled unjustly over its inhabitants,
A neighbor rules unjustly over dwellers
And over the dwelling itself, without respect.
And decay consumes without respect
شنlaunched غاراتهits raids عليهagainst it جهاراًopenly
شن غاراته عليه جهاراً
أيwhat a جيشٍarmy للنائباتof the calamities لهامvast
أي جيشٍ للنائبات لهام
It openly launched its raids against it—
Waging open war against it
What a vast army of calamities!
What army could defeat such grief
طالgrew long وجديmy grief إذas طالgrew long فيهin it وقوفيmy standing
طال وجدي إذ طال فيه وقوفي
فأطالso he prolonged العذولthe reproacher فيهabout it كلاميmy speech
فأطال العذول فيه كلامي
My grief grew long as my standing there grew long,
Long has my sorrow grown with waiting here
So the reproacher drew out my speech about it.
So I draw out my woeful laments
لائميyou who blame me بالبكاءfor weeping هلdo أنتyou تدريknow
لائمي بالبكاء هل أنت تدري
أيwhat ندبnoble man أبكيI mourn وأيand what همامgreat-hearted hero
أي ندب أبكي وأي همام
You who blame me for weeping, do you know
Chiding me for weeping, can you know
What noble man I mourn, and what great-hearted hero?
What loss I mourn, what worries plague me?

Do you see what keen and polished blade
Do you see what keen and polished sword
The sharpest sword of death has blunted?
Death has sharpest for its sheath?

أترى أي طود مجدٍ عظيم
حملتهcarried it العظامthe great men فوقabove الهامthe heads
حملته العظام فوق الهام
Do you see what mighty mountain of glory
Do you see what towering glory
The great men carried above their heads?
The bones atop the dust have borne?

بين آساده يد الأيام
Do you see what lion in his lair was hunted
Do you see what ruin time has hunted down
Among his lions by the hand of time?
Among its lions, in its lair?
تخذhe took اللحدthe grave غابةa thicket وهلand does الليthe lion (word begins)
تخذ اللحد غابة وهل اللي
ثlion (word ends) لهfor him غابةٌa thicket سوىother than الآجامthe reed-thickets

He made the grave his thicket—and does the lion
Taking the grave as refuge - but does
Have any thicket but the reedbeds?
The lion have any refuge but destruction?

O my people, what a calamity turns children
Oh my people, for a misfortune that makes
Gray-haired before the time of weaning!

إيمان إذ هد جانب الإسلام
And a loss that weakened the arm of
For a calamity that has rent asunder
Faith, as it laid low Islam's flank!
The shoulder of belief when Islam slid
هوit is فقدthe loss of المولىthe master التقيthe pious النقيthe pure
هو فقد المولى التقي النقي
العالمthe learned man الحبرthe great scholar ذيpossessing المحلthe station الساميthe exalted
العالم الحبر ذي المحل السامي
It is the loss of the pious, pure master,
It was the loss of that pious sincere scholar
The learned sage of exalted station,
That fountainhead of wisdom and restraint

قصرت فيه ألسن الأقلام
He who scaled the summit of high honors through excellence
He who ascended to the highest peak of glory
Before which the tongues of pens fell short.
Leaving eloquent pens forever wanting
ليتwould that شعريmy knowledge أينwhere استقلdeparted تقيthe devout one among
ليت شعري أين استقل تقي
الأتقياءthe devout النقيthe pure one منfrom كلevery ذامfault
الأتقياء النقي من كل ذام
Would that I knew where he has gone—the most devout
Would that I knew where that most devout
Of the devout, pure of every fault.
And sincere of the pious has gone
أينwhere مصباحthe lamp of أنسناour solace منhe who بهthrough him ينجابis lifted
أين مصباح أنسنا من به ينجاب
عناfrom us دجىthe darkness of الخطوبthe calamities الحسامcutting; literally, the keen sword
عنا دجى الخطوب الحسام
Where is the lamp of our solace, he through whom is lifted
Where the lantern whose light dispersed for us
From us the gloom of sword-sharp calamities?
The darkness of calamities, tribulations
أينwhere منhe who كانwas عيشناour life فيهwith him غضاًfresh
أين من كان عيشنا فيه غضاً
واللياليand the nights مفترةًparting their lips بابتسامwith a smile
والليالي مفترةً بابتسام
Where is he with whom our life was fresh,
Where is he who was our sweetest life
And the nights parted their lips in smiles?
Whose nights were graced with smiles?
